Project OverviewAlphabet Pillows
Difficulty Level = Intermediate
Sew a large or small letter or number to add to your bed, sofa’s, or even shelves. Mix and match letters to create words. Personalize them with optional decorations, piping, trims to create unique pillows.
Our Facebook group is a great place to get help, share your tips and creations! We are a friendly bunch, and we love to help and see what you have made.
Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

* If you are using a narrower fabric, a directional print, or a fabric with nap you may need more.
** Make sure to wash, dry, and press all fabrics before cutting out in case they shrink. You will also need:
Tools needed are a sewing machine (or you could do it by hand), needle, scissors, pinking shears, pins, disappearing ink pen, optional walking foot. As an option, vinyl and a die cut machine can be used for the decorations.
Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.
Please follow this video for information and assistance on assembling this pattern.
Also, please note that some Rebecca Page patterns and projects also come with cut files and a printable design page which you can use to plan your project if you wish. These are provided in a separate section below to avoid any confusion!

Cut around the edges, leaving the fold. If you have folded your fabric correctly the fold will be parallel to the two edges of the fabric that are finished. The raw edges (e.g. the ones you could pick at and threads would come off) will be at a right angle to your fold.

1 . OPTIONAL Decoration1.0Decorations can be added to letters and numbers. If you are not adding decorations, skip to step 2 for OPTIONAL Trim or to step 3. If you are adding decorations, follow below.
1.1Decide where you want the decorations.
Iron/glue/place then stitch in place.
NOTE – Remember that each letter/number has a ½ inch seam allowance. Add your decorations leaving adequate seam allowance.
2 . OPTIONAL Trim2.0Trims can be added to all shapes and sizes. If you are not adding Trim, skip to step 3. If you are adding the OPTIONAL Trim, follow below.
2.1Lay the Front Pillow right side facing up. Place the trim along the edges, right sides facing, with the decorative part of the trim facing towards the center. Pin.
NOTE – If your trim is narrower than the ½ inch seam allowance, make sure you are placing it within the seam allowance.
TIP – If making Letters/Numbers with corners, start adding the trim at a corner. If making Letters/Numbers that are round start at any point along the edge.
2.2Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
3 . Outer Edge3.1Letters/Numbers with one Outer Edge: Place the Outer Edge piece right sides together, matching a short edge. Pin.
Letters/Numbers with more than one Outer Edge: Place two Outer Edge pieces right sides together, matching a short edge. Pin.

If your letter/number only has an Outer Edge, follow below.
If your letter/number also has an Inner Edge, skip to step 5.
4 . Letters/Numbers with Only Outer Edges4.0Step 4 and step 5 will show how to assemble the letters/numbers: C, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7.
4.1Place the Outer Edge onto the Front, right sides together. Pin.
TIP – For Letters/Numbers with corners, start pinning at a corner and continue pinning around.
TIP – Snip into the corner of the Outer Edge approximately ¼ inch to help make it easier to stitch the Outer Edge onto the Letter/Number.
NOTE – The length of the outer edge and Front are the identical. Pin them together at the ½ inch seam line, rather than the raw edges.
4.2Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
Press the seam allowance towards the Outer Edge.
NOTE – To stitch the corners, stop ½ inch from the edge. Drop the needle and pivot the fabric. Move all the Outer Edge fabric out of the way, then stitch to the next edge.
TIP – Stitch slowly, and double check to be sure that the Outer Edge fabric is moved out of the way and hasn’t been caught in the seam.
4.3If you are sewing a corner shape, clip the corners both diagonally but also at an angle to reduce bulk and to ensure a sharp point.
To help align the Back piece correctly, make small snips into the seam allowance at the corners or draw them on with a disappearing ink pen. This will make it easier to match the Back piece.
If you are sewing a round shape, clip into the seam allowance along the curves, being careful not to clip into the stitching.
TIP – Use pinking shears to trim the seam allowance all the way around the pillow.
4.4Place the Back onto the other side of the Outer Edge, right sides together, using the marks/notches made above to match edges. Pin.
TIP – For Letters/Numbers with corners, start pinning at a corner and continue pinning around.
TIP – Snip into the corner of the Outer Edge approximately ¼ inch to help make it easier to stitch the Outer Edge onto the Letter/Number.
4.5Continue pinning around the Outer Edge.
4.6Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance and leaving a 2-3 inch gap for turning.
Press the seam allowance towards the Outer Edge.
TIP – Before stitching, make sure all corners are aligned correctly and the Back is not twisted.
NOTE – The gap for turning can be left towards the middle on any of the long edges. Do not leave the gap close to a corner as this makes it hard to get a nice corner.
4.7If you are sewing a corner shape, clip the corners both diagonally but also at an angle to reduce bulk and to ensure a sharp point.
4.8Turn right side out through the gap. Press.
NOTE – Pressing each seam from the wrong side and right side will give the pillow more structure.
TIP – Push out the corners with a blunt object, like a chopstick, so that there are crisp, sharp edges and corners.
4.9Stuff the pillow using your filling.
NOTE – Do not overstuff the pillow as this will change the shape.
TIP – Before stuffing, start by taking handfuls of filling and gently pull the clumps apart while fluffing. Repeat 2-3 times with each handful then stuff the pillow.
TIP – As the pillow is being stuffed, pay close attention to what the pillow looks like from the outside. Ideally the pillow should be stuffed uniformly with no bumps or spots that feel empty. If you find areas that don’t look or feel right, fix them before moving on.
TIP – If you want your letters or numbers to stand, when stuffing, put something heavy at the bottom.
4.10Use a slipstitch (also called a ‘ladder stitch’) to stitch the gap closed.
Your fabric will be folded under by ½ inch, and you will be stitching along the folded edge.
Thread your needle, tying the two thread tail ends together in a knot. This will provide added strength to your finished seam.
Push your needle up and through one of the folded seams, from the inside of the pillow to the outside, pulling the thread tail completely through.
Your knotted end will now be nicely concealed within the seam on the inside.
Directly across from your starting point, push the needle down and then back up through the opposite seam fold to create a stitch that is between ⅛ – ¼ inch long. When you pull the thread through, you will notice that the stitch you just made is concealed within the seam crease, and there will be a horizontal stitch connecting the left and right sides of your opening.
Pull the thread through so that it is taut.
4.11Repeat these steps, pinching both sides together as you sew (this will help keep your stitching even), until you reach the end of the opening.
To tighten the stitches, gently pull the thread. This will conceal the stitches in between the seams.
We’ve left the stitches loose in this picture to show you what the ladder stitch looks like. You will be pulling the thread through and taut after each stitch.
To end off you create a loop for your needle to pass through by picking up a tiny section of the opposite seam and passing your needle through the loop. Tighten to form a knot. If you need to reinforce the stitching repeat this step. Snip your threads.
Your Pillow is finished!
5 . Inner Edge5.1Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.3 with all Inner Edge pieces.
6 . Letters/Numbers with Inner and Outer Edges6.0Step 6 will show how to assemble the letters/numbers: A, B, D, O, P, Q, R, 0, 4, 6, 8, 9.
6.1Place Outer Edge onto the Front, right sides together. Pin.
6.2Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
Press the seam allowance towards the Outer Edge.
NOTE – If you are sewing a corner edge: to stitch the corners, stop ½ inch from the edge. Drop the needle and pivot the fabric. Move all the Outer Edge fabric out of the way, then stitch to the next edge.
TIP – Stitch slowly, and double check to be sure that the Outer Edge fabric is moved out of the way and hasn’t been caught in the seam.
6.3If you are sewing a corner shape, clip the corners both diagonally but also at an angle to reduce bulk and to ensure a sharp point. Make little snips into the seam allowance at the corners.
If you are sewing a round shape, clip into the seam allowance along the curves, being careful not to clip into the stitching.
TIP – Use pinking shears to trim the seam allowance all the way around the pillow.
6.4Place the Back onto the other side of the Outer Edge, right sides together. Pin.
To help align the Back piece correctly, make small snips into the seam allowance at the corners or draw them on with a disappearing ink pen. This will make it easier to match the Back piece.
6.5Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
Press the seam allowance towards the Outer Edge.
If you are sewing a corner shape, clip the corners diagonally but also at an angle to reduce bulk and to ensure a sharp point.

TIP – Use pinking shears to trim the seam allowance all the way around the pillow.
6.6Place the Inner Edge onto the Front, right sides together. Pin at the top of the inside edge.
Continue pinning around the Inner Edge.
6.7Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
6.8Turn right side out.
At this point you will have the Front and Back attached to the Outer Edge and one side of the Inner Edge sewn to the Front.
6.9Take the matching point on the Back and the Inner Edge and twist them so they are right sides together, matching the points together. Pin.
6.10Starting at the pinned point, stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance, leaving a 2-3 inch gap for turning.
Sew slowly, twisting the fabric so it is right sides together, gently pulling from the inside.
6.11Turn right side out through the gap. Press.
NOTE – Pressing each seam from the wrong side and right side will give the pillow more structure.
6.12Stuff the pillow using your filling.

* If you are using a narrower fabric, a directional print, or a fabric with nap you may need more.
** Make sure to wash, dry, and press all fabrics before cutting out in case they shrink. You will also need:
- Soft toy filling
- Large – Approximately 30 ounces will be sufficient for one pillow with average stuffing.
- Small – Approximately 12 ounces will be sufficient for one pillow with average stuffing.
- OPTIONAL Piping, cording, or trim. You will need approximately (per letter or number):
- Large A-Z – 5 yards
- Small A-Z – 2 yards
- Large 0-9 – 3 yards
- Small 0-9 – 1.25 yards
- NOTE – If you are adding piping to both sides of the pillow, you will need double this amount.
- OPTIONAL Light weight interfacing – If you are sewing a small size pillow and would like it to stand up, you can add interfacing to give it some structure. Approximately 0.5 yards will be sufficient for all small sizes.
- Thread to match
Tools needed are a sewing machine (or you could do it by hand), needle, scissors, pinking shears, pins, disappearing ink pen, optional walking foot. As an option, vinyl and a die cut machine can be used for the decorations.
- Soft toy filling
