Fabric Stair Basket

The fabric stair basket is a quick sew that is easily customizable to fit stairs anywhere. The handles make it simple to grab the bag and go, and the optional pockets make it easy to tuck in those things you don’t want to lose. Use the bag to collect the random items that get left around, or to help carry the items that need put away. However it gets used, the fabric stair basket will always look nice sitting on the stairs helping to keep everything in its place.

Please read the full instructions before getting started.

Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.

Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Fabric – You will need a woven or non-stretch fabric. Cotton, quilting cotton, flannel, denim, cotton lawn, canvas or upholstery fabric would work. For a more stable basket, we recommend at least one heavy weight fabric.

* If you are using a narrower fabric, a directional print, or a fabric with nap you may need more.

** Make sure to wash, dry, and press all fabrics before cutting out in case they shrink.

 

You will also need:

• 60 inches wide High Loft Fusible Fleece Interfacing – approximately 2.00 yards will be sufficient for all sizes.
• NOTE – There are many other types of stabilizers that can be used, they may affect the finished look if they are not similar to Fusible Fleece.
• OPTIONAL Pocket Elastic – ¼ inch wide Elastic. Approximately 1 yard will be sufficient for all sizes.
• OPTIONAL Decorations – you can personalize your baskets using embroidery, vinyl, paint etc.
• Thread to match

 

Tools needed are, sewing machine, pins, scissors, tape measure or ruler and an optional walking foot.

 

Settings

The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.

Print at 100%.

On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.

Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.

Side Panels

 

The pattern is designed to fit stairs that have a 7.5 inch / 19.05 cm rise and 11 inch / 28 cm run.  If you have any other sized stairs, skip to the notes below the cutting chart.

 

Cut each of the pieces according to the directions on the pattern piece. Seam allowances are all included so just cut them as is.

 

Cutting Charts – All pattern pieces are included, however if you prefer to cut using a cutting chart, the dimensions for the rectangular pieces (in INCHES) are below:

• Measure the Rise and Run of your stairs.
• If Rise is different, you will have to change sides A, C and E of the Side Panels, the longer side of Front Panel and the longer side of Bottom Panel. OPTIONAL Pockets will need some modification, too.

• A different Run size will change sides B and D on the Side Panels and long side of the Bottom Panel. The OPTIONAL Small Pocket should be changed as well.
• Seam Allowances – These are ½ inch on either side of the seam, so you will need to allow a total of 1 inch (½ + ½ = 1) to create the Side Panels.
• The long side of the Front Panel will be equal to edge E of the Side Panel.
• The long edge of the Bottom Panel can be calculated like this: (A – 0.5) + B + C + (D – 0.5).
• Piecing Fabric – If any of the pieces are larger than your fabric, you may need to cut them in multiple pieces and stitch together. Make sure to add seam allowances, do this now before continuing onto the sewing steps.

 

 

Cutting Checklist:

• Side Panel – Fabric cut 2 (1x mirror image pair), Lining cut 2 (1x mirror image pair), Fleece Interfacing cut 4 at inner line (1x mirror image pair)
• Bottom Panel – Fabric cut 1 on fold, Lining cut 1 on fold, Fleece Interfacing cut 2 on fold at inner line
• Handle – Fabric cut 2, Lining cut 2, OPTIONAL Interfacing cut 2
• Front Panel – Fabric cut 1, Lining cut 1, Fleece Interfacing cut 2 at inner line
• OPTIONAL Side Pocket – Fabric cut 1 per pocket, Lining cut 1 per pocket
• OPTIONAL Front Pocket – Fabric cut 1 per pocket, Lining cut 1 per pocket

½ inch seam allowance included – Top stitching ⅛ inch – Basting ¼ inch

 

Preparation –

1. Interfacing – Use manufacturers’ instructions to apply interfacing and fusible fleece.
2. OPTIONAL PERSONALIZATION – Add applique, or vinyl to the Side Panel as desired.

 

Sewing –

1. HANDLES – Place Main and Lining Handle pieces right sides together along long edge. Pin. Stitch. Turn and press. Open the Handle. Create a memory hem on Main Handle. Repeat with Handle Lining. Place short edges of Main and Lining Handle right sides together. Pin. Stitch short edges. Trim corners, turn. Refold memory hem on both long edges of Handle. Place edges together. Pin and topstitch. OPTIONAL: Topstitch around entire Handle. Repeat to create second Handle.
2. OPTIONAL Pockets – Place Main and Lining right sides together. Stitch top edge. Turn and press. Flip Main Pocket up. Place elastic next to seam. Baste onto one edge. Slightly stretch elastic, baste onto opposite seam. Place Pocket onto right side of Side Panel aligning with bottom raw edges and sides. Baste. Repeat with all OPTIONAL Pockets.
3. Bag Construction – Lay Bottom Panel on top of Front Panel aligning short edges right sides together. Pin. Stitch. Place Front Panel onto Side Panel edge E, right sides together. Pin, mark ½ inch from the bottom raw edge. Stitch. Align Bottom Panel with edge D. Pin, mark ½ inch from the end of the Side Panel raw edge on the Side Panel. Stitch. Snip into Bottom Panel at stitch line. Align Bottom Panel to Side Panel edge C. Mark ½ inch from end of Side Panel edge C. Stitch. Snip into the Bottom Panel at the end of the stitch. Align the Bottom Panel to Side Panel edge B. Pin, mark ½ inch from raw edge. Stitch. Snip into Bottom panel at the end of the stitching. Pin the Bottom Panel to the Side Panel edge A. Stitch. Repeat with the other Side Panel. Clip into the seam allowances where the bag sits on the stairs. Turn. Repeat for the Lining pieces.
4. FINISHING BAG – Create a memory hem on both the Main and Lining. Drop the Bag Lining into the Main Bag with the wrong sides together, matching the side seams. Pin. Topstitch. Folded OPTION – Fold the top of the bag 1 to 1 ½ inches over. OPTIONAL – Topstitch to folded over portion to the bag. Both OPTIONS – Pin the Handles at the markings. Stitch in place making a 1-inch rectangle with an X in the middle.

 

File Types

We have included three to four file types for you to choose from. Please choose whichever you are more familiar with or works best with your cutting machine. For cut files of the smaller pieces for some of our patterns, like the Dolls House Quiet Book and Add-on, we do not include a PDF copy. All versions come with .SVG, .PNG, and .DXF.

You will start by downloading the files from your account. Open your software and choose the file type you’d like to work with.

Pattern Cut Files

When working with cut files to cut small pattern pieces, it is imperative that you make sure the file is the correct size prior to cutting. We have included a one-inch square box offset in each file. You should be able to move the square off to the side, so it isn’t cut with the rest of your file. For files that also have square pieces, please be sure to compare them to the cut chart in the original file instructions. We’d always prefer you double check than have something cut out that isn’t useable!

Other Cut Files

For all other cut files, you should resize to your project needs. Please do keep in mind the size of some of the features. Going very small may make it difficult to cut smaller fonts or finer details.

Media

As mentioned earlier, it is very important to choose the correct media to for your cut. There is a huge selection to choose from and it can be overwhelming. Be sure to use the materials suggested by your machine for the type of project you are completing.
