Difficulty Level = Beginner
Sew yourself and your family a quick and easy Face Mask. There are four styles available, all with or without an option for a filter pocket. Choose between a shaped panel or pleated panel. There is also a shaped panel scarf with an option for a wraparound or infinity style.

- ELASTIC OPTION: ⅛ – ⅜ wide Elastic – approximately 0.5 yards will be sufficient for all sizes.
- TIE OPTION: ¼ or ½ inch wide Bias Binding or Ribbon for ties – approximately 2 yards will be sufficient for all sizes for shaped or pleated options. You could also use any stretch fabric to create ties.

NOTE – The Scarf Mask is suitable for Teens to Adults (sizes M – XL).
Materials and ToolsMask – Main and Lining fabric can be quilting cotton or any tightly woven fabric.
Scarf – You can use nearly any light or medium weight woven fabric. Suitable light weight options are chiffon, organza, or georgette. A light to mid weight woven such as a cotton lawn, cotton voile, silk, rayon, rayon challis, silk crepe, crepe de chine, taffeta or silk satin will drape.

Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.

NOTE – To cut fabric on the fold, fold your fabric over parallel to the selvage edges. Align the pattern piece so it is on the fold of the fabric. Cut around the edges, leaving the fold. If you have folded your fabric correctly the fold will be parallel to the two edges of the fabric that are finished. The raw edges (e.g. the ones you could pick at and threads would come off) will be at a right angle to your fold.

- Tie OPTION: Making Ties – Fold the binding in half lengthways. Topstitch both long edges. Tie a knot on one side. Repeat.
- ELASTIC / TIES – Lay Main Mask right side up, place elastic/ties ½ inch from top and bottom on short edge. Stitch. Repeat for other side of Main Mask.
- CENTER SEAM – Place Main Masks right sides together, matching center seam. Stitch. Trim and notch seam. Press. Topstitch center seam.
- MASK ASSEMBLY – Fold elastic/ties into middle of Mask. Place the two sets of Main Masks right sides together. Stitch, leaving a gap. Clip corners and trim seams. Turn right side out. Press. Topstitch.
- ELASTIC / TIES – Lay Main Mask right side up, place elastic/ties ½ inch from top and bottom on short edge. Stitch. Repeat for other side of Main Mask.
- CENTER SEAM – Place Main Masks right sides together, matching center seam. Stitch. Trim and notch seam. Press. Topstitch center seam. Repeat for Main Lining.
- LINING – Press the short straight edge of the Mask Lining over to the wrong side by ¼ inch, then another ¼ inch. Topstitch. Repeat with second piece. Press the longer straight edge of the Side Facing over to the wrong side by ¼ inch, then another ¼ inch. Topstitch. Repeat for the other side. Clip the pointed edge off the Side Facing pieces. Repeat with second piece.
- MASK ASSEMBLY – Lay the Main Mask right side up. Place Mask Lining right sides facing down. Stitch. Tuck elastic/ties under Mask Lining. Place the Side Facing pieces onto Mask, right sides together with Main Mask. Stitch. Clip corners and trim seams. Turn right side out. Press. Topstitch.
- PLEATS – Transfer pleat markings. Fold first two top markings wrong sides together. Pin. Repeat with third and fourth marking for second pleat, and fifth and sixth marking making third pleat. Repeat on opposite side of the Main Mask. Fold each pleat down facing the bottom of the Mask. Press. Baste pleats. Repeat with the second Main Mask.
- ELASTIC / TIES – Lay Main Mask right side facing up. Place elastic/ties ½ inch from top and bottom along short straight edge. Stitch. Repeat for other side of Main Mask.
- MASK ASSEMBLY – Fold elastic/ties into middle of Mask. Lay a Main Mask right side up. Place second Main Mask right sides facing down. Stitch, leaving a gap. Clip corners and trim seams. Turn right side out. Press. Topstitch.

Lay the Main Mask (with elastic/ties) with right side facing up. Place Mask Lining on top right sides together, matching center points. Stitch. Place the Side Facings on top right sides down. Stitch. Clip corners and trim seams. Turn right side out. Press. OPTIONAL Topstitch.
- CENTER SEAM – Place Main Masks right sides together, matching center seam. Stitch. Trim and notch seam. Press. Topstitch center seam. Repeat for other pair of Main Masks.
- INFINITY SCARF OPTION – Stitch the Infinity Scarf using a French seam.
- FINISHING THE SCARF EDGES – Press top edge to wrong side by ¼ inch, then another ¼ inch. Topstitch. Repeat for the bottom edge. SCARF OPTION: Repeat to finish short ends of scarf.
- ELASTIC – Lay Main Mask right side facing up. Place elastic along top edge at 1 ½ inch and 3 inches from side. Stitch. Repeat to attach elastic to other side of Main Mask.
- MASK ASSEMBLY – Place the two sets of Main Masks right sides together. Pin bottom edge ½ inch from the side, then pin 3 inches from that pin. Stitch between pins. Mark center of Scarf. Pin the elastic out the way. Turn Scarf inside out. Place Mask (without elastic) right side onto wrong side of Scarf. Pin top edge of Mask to Scarf, curving the Scarf away from the Mask top edge on either side. Push the Scarf up in between the two Mask pieces. Pin the top edges of the second Mask piece to the first Mask. Stitch. Clip corners. Trim top edge. Turn right side out. Press seam up.
- FINISHING MASK – Fold each bottom edge of the Masks over to the wrong side by ½ inch. Press. Place Masks wrong sides together, matching center seams and hems. Pin. Topstitch. Flip Mask down. OPTIONAL: Topstitch Mask to Scarf along top edge.
- CENTER SEAM – Place Main Masks right sides together, match curved center seam. Stitch. Trim and notch seam. Press. Topstitch center seam.
- LINING – Press the short straight edge of the Lining over to the wrong side by ¼ inch, then another ¼ inch. Topstitch. Repeat with straight edges of Side Facings. Clip the pointed edge off the Side Facing pieces.
- ELASTIC – Lay a Side Facing right side facing up. Place the elastic along the top edge, at 1 ½ inch and at 3 inches from the side. Stitch. Repeat on other Side Facing.
- INFINITY SCARF OPTION – Stitch the Infinity Scarf using a French seam.
- FINISHING THE SCARF EDGES – Press top edge to wrong side by ¼ inch, then another ¼ inch. Topstitch. Repeat for the bottom edge and short side edges. SCARF OPTION: Repeat to finish short ends of scarf.
- MASK ASSEMBLY – Place Side Facings onto Main Mask right sides together, matching bottom edges. Stitch. Pin elastic to Side Facing. Mark center of Scarf. Lay Scarf down. Flip Side Facings out the way. Place Main Mask, right side down onto the wrong side of Scarf, matching centers. Pin top edge, curving the Scarf away from the Main Mask top edge on either side. Turn Scarf so right sides are facing up. Place Mask Lining right sides together, matching center seams. Pin top edge. Push Scarf up in between Main Mask and Mask Lining. Flip Side Facings over to the side of Mask Lining. Pin top edge. Stitch. Clip corners. Turn and press.
- FINISHING MASK – Press bottom edge of Mask Lining to wrong side by ½ inch. Place Mask Lining and Side Facing pieces wrong sides together, matching center seams and hems. Pin and topstitch. Flip Mask down. OPTIONAL: Topstitch Mask to Scarf along top edge.

0.1Tie OPTION: Making Ties
You can use bias binding or ribbon for ties. If you are using ribbon, tie a knot on one side. You will attach the other side to the Mask pieces. If you are using elastic, skip to selecting your style below.
Fold the binding in half lengthways and press.
0.2Fold the two sides to the center and press again.
0.3Fold closed. Pin.
0.4Topstitch ⅛ inch along both long edges.
Tie a knot on one end. The other side will be attached to the Mask pieces. Repeat for the second binding piece.

3.4Clip all corners to reduce bulk.
3.6Turn the Mask right side out. Remove any pins. Press the seams.
TIP – Push out the corners with a blunt object, like a chopstick, so that there are crisp, sharp edges and corners.
TIP – Roll the seam between your fingers so the seam is right on the edge, then press well.

3.9Repeat steps 3.5 to 3.8 on the opposite Side Facing piece.
4 . Mask Assembly4.1Lay the Main Mask right side up. Place the Mask Lining right sides facing, matching the center seam. Pin.
NOTE – Check you are placing the Mask Lining the correct way. The top edge is rounder. Match the top and bottom edges. The center seams should be in the opposite directions.
4.3Tuck the elastic/ties under the Mask Lining, so they don’t get caught in the seams.
TIP – Pin in place so they won’t get caught in the seams.
4.4Place the Side Facing pieces onto the Mask, right sides together with the Main Mask, matching short straight edges. Pin.
NOTE – The top of the Side Facing is curved. The bottom edge is straighter. Check you are attaching the Side Facing pieces the correct way.
NOTE – The Side Facing will be right sides together with the Main Mask but sitting over the wrong side of the Mask Lining.
4.6Clip the corners to reduce bulk.
4.8Turn the Mask right side out through the gap. Carefully remove any pins as you turn. Press the seams.
TIP – Push out the corners with a blunt object, like a chopstick, so that there are crisp, sharp edges and corners.
TIP – Roll the seam between your fingers so the seam is right on the edge, then press well.

1.2Lay the Main Mask right side facing up. Fold the first two top markings together, wrong sides facing. This will create the first pleat. Pin.
1.3Repeat step 1.2 with the third and fourth markings, making the second pleat.
Repeat step 1.2 with the fifth and sixth markings, making the third pleat.
1.4Repeat steps 1.2 to 1.3 on the opposite side of the Main Mask.
1.5Fold each pleat flat, facing down to the bottom edge. Pin. Press.
1.7Repeat steps 1.2 to 1.6 with the second Main Mask.
2 . Elastic / Ties2.1Lay a Main Mask right side facing up. Place the elastic/ties ½ inch from the top and the bottom of the short straight edge. Pin.
TIP – Make sure the elastic isn’t twisted between the two pins.
3 . Mask Assembly3.0This step is the same If you are using elastic or ties.
3.1Fold the elastic/ties into the middle of the Main Mask.
TIP – Pin in place so they won’t get caught in the seams.
3.2Lay a Main Mask right side up. Place the second Main Mask right sides facing. Pin.
3.5Turn the Mask right side out through the gap. Carefully remove any pins as you turn. Press the seams.

3.2Fold another ¼ inch towards the wrong side. Press.
3.4Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.3 on the other side.
4 . Mask Assembly4.1Fold the long straight edge of the Side Facing over to the wrong side by ¼ inch. Press.
4.2Fold another ¼ inch towards the wrong side. Press.
4.4Repeat steps 4.1 to 4.3 on the other Side Facing piece.
4.5Lay the Main Mask (with elastic/ties) right side facing up. Find the center of the Main Mask and Mask Lining. Place the Mask Lining on top, right sides facing, matching centers. Pin.
NOTE – The pleats on the Mask Lining need to face the opposite direction to the Main Mask. Once turned through they will both be facing down.
4.7Lay the Side Facing pieces right sides down, matching raw edges. Pin.
NOTE – The finished edges should be facing towards the middle.
4.10Turn the Mask right side out through the gap. Carefully remove any pins as you turn. Press the seams.
TIP – Push out the corners with a blunt object, like a chopstick, so that there are crisp, sharp edges and corners.
TIP – Roll the seam between your fingers so the seam is right on the edge, then press well.

1 . Center Seam1.1Place the Main Masks right sides together, matching the curved center seam. Pin.
2 . Infinity Scarf OPTION2.1Fold the Scarf in half width ways, wrong sides together (right sides out), matching short edges. Pin.
2.4Turn wrong side out and press from the other side as flat as possible. Make sure that the seam line is at the exact center of the fold.
TIP – For some fabrics, you will find it easier to first press the seam to one side, then turn the fabric wrong side out and press it so the seam is in the middle. It gives a little more control and helps ensure the fold is nice and crisp.
2.5Stitch again approximately ¼ inch from the edge.
This will encase the raw edges, so they are not seen (a French seam).
2.6Turn right side out and press as flat as possible. Make sure that the seam line is at the exact center of the fold.
3 . Finishing the Scarf Edges3.1Fold the top edge over to the wrong side by ¼ inch. Press.
TIP – Trim off any frayed edges before folding the top edge over.
Fold another ¼ inch towards the wrong side. Pin.
Press.
3.3Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.2 for the bottom edge.
INFINITY SCARF OPTION: Skip to step 4.
WRAPAROUND SCARF OPTION: Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.2 for the short raw edges.
4 . Elastic4.1Lay a Main Mask right side facing up. Place the elastic along the top edge, at 1 ½ inch and at 3 inches from the side. Pin.
TIP – Make sure the elastic isn’t twisted between the two pins.
NOTE – The elastic is only attached to one set of Main Masks.
4.3Repeat steps 4.1 to 4.2 to attach elastic to the other side of the Main Mask.
5 . Mask Assembly5.1Place the two sets of Main Masks right sides together. You will be pinning along the bottom edge. Pin 1 ½ inches from the side, then pin 3 inches from that pin.
TIP – Check that your elastic is up and out of the way.
TIP – Be sure that both Main Masks are facing the same direction. The pointed edge is the top and the curved edge is the bottom.
5.3Fold the Scarf in half marking the center front with a pin.
NOTE – For the Infinity Scarf OPTION, the center front is opposite to the seam from step 2
5.4Pin the elastic to the Mask, away from the top edge, so it won’t get caught in the seam as you are stitching.
5.5Turn the Scarf inside out. Place the Mask (without elastic) right side onto the wrong side of the Scarf, matching center seams, and raw edges of Mask with finished edges of Scarf. Pin the top edge of the Mask to the Scarf. As you get close to the edge you will need to curve the Scarf away from the Mask top edge.
5.6Push the Scarf up in between the two Mask pieces. Pin the top edges of the second Mask piece to the first Mask. Check that the Scarf is still pinned to the Mask from step 5.5.
NOTE – You are only pinning the top edge. You will turn the Scarf and Mask out through the bottom gap.
6 . Finishing Mask6.1Fold each bottom edge of the Masks over to the wrong side by ½ inch. Press.
6.2Place the Masks wrong sides together, matching center seams and hems. Pin along the gap.

1 . Center Seam1.1Place the Main Masks right sides together, matching the curved center seam. Pin.
1.6Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.5 with the Mask Lining pieces.
TIP – Press the seam allowance in the opposite direction to the Main Mask in step 1.4.
NOTE – The elastic is only attached to the Main Mask.
2 . Lining2.2Fold the short straight edge of the Lining over to the wrong side by ¼ inch. Press.
2.2Fold another ¼ inch towards the wrong side. Press.
2.4Repeat steps 2.1 to 2.3 on the other short straight edge.
2.5Fold the longer straight edge of the Side Facing over to the wrong side by ¼ inch. Press.
2.6Fold another ¼ inch towards the wrong side. Press.
2.9Repeat steps 2.5 to 2.8 on the other Side Facing piece.
3 . Elastic3.1Lay a Side Facing right side facing up. Place the elastic along the top edge, at 1 ½ and at 3 inches from the side. Pin.
TIP – Make sure the elastic isn’t twisted between the two pins.
3.3Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.2 to attach elastic to the other Side Facing.
4 . Infinity Scarf OPTION4.1Fold the Scarf in half width ways, wrong sides together (right sides out), matching short edges. Pin.
4.4Turn wrong side out and press from the other side as flat as possible. Make sure that the seam line is at the exact center of the fold.
TIP – For some fabrics, you will find it easier to first press the seam to one side, then turn the fabric wrong side out and press it so the seam is in the middle. It gives a little more control and helps ensure the fold is nice and crisp.
4.5Stitch again approximately ¼ inch from the edge.
This will encase the raw edges, so they are not seen (a French seam).
4.6Turn right side out and press as flat as possible. Make sure that the seam line is at the exact center of the fold.
5 . Finishing the Scarf Edges5.1Fold the top edge over to the wrong side by ¼ inch. Press.
TIP – Trim off any frayed edges before folding the top edge over.
Fold another ¼ inch towards the wrong side. Pin.
Press.
5.3Repeat steps 5.1 to 5.2 for the bottom edge.
INFINITY SCARF OPTION: Skip to step 6.
WRAPAROUND SCARF OPTION: Repeat steps 5.1 to 5.2 for the short raw edges.
6 . Mask Assembly6.1Place the Side Facings onto the Main Mask right sides together, matching bottom edges.
TIP – Check that your elastic/ ties are up and out of the way.
TIP – Be sure that the Side Facings and Main Mask are facing the same direction. The pointed edge is the top and the curved edge is the bottom.
6.3Pin the elastic to the Side Facing, away from the top edge, so it won’t get caught in the seam as you are stitching.
6.4Fold the Scarf in half marking the center front with a pin.
NOTE – For the Infinity Scarf OPTION, the center front is opposite to the seam from step 3.
6.5Lay the Scarf down wrong side facing up. Flip the Side Facings out the way. Place the Main Mask right side down onto the wrong side of the Scarf, matching centers. Pin the top edge. As you get close to the edge you will need to curve the Scarf away from the Main Mask top edge.
6.6Turn the Scarf so right sides are facing up. Place the Mask Lining right sides together, matching center seams with the Main Mask. Pin along the top edge.
NOTE – Check you are placing the Mask Lining the correct way. The top edge is pointier, and the bottom is flatter. Match the top and bottom edges. The center seams should be facing opposite directions.
6.7Push the Scarf up to the center in between the Main Mask and Mask Lining. Flip the Side Facings over to the side of the Mask Lining. Pin along the top edge.
6.9Clip all corners to reduce bulk.
6.10Turn the Mask right side out through the gap. Remove any pins. Press the seams.
TIP – Push out the corners with a blunt object, like a chopstick, so that there are crisp, sharp edges and corners.
Press the seam allowance up.
7 . Finishing Mask7.1Fold the bottom edge of the Mask Lining to the wrong side by ½ inch. Press.
7.2Place the Mask Lining over Main Mask wrong sides together, matching center seams and hems. Pin along the gap.
7.4OPTIONAL: Pin the Mask to the Scarf along the top edge.
Topstitch across the top of the Main Mask using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.

Materials and ToolsMask – Main and Lining fabric can be quilting cotton or any tightly woven fabric.
Scarf – You can use nearly any light or medium weight woven fabric. Suitable light weight options are chiffon, organza, or georgette. A light to mid weight woven such as a cotton lawn, cotton voile, silk, rayon, rayon challis, silk crepe, crepe de chine, taffeta or silk satin will drape.

- ELASTIC OPTION: ⅛ – ⅜ wide Elastic – approximately 0.5 yards will be sufficient for all sizes.
- TIE OPTION: ¼ or ½ inch wide Bias Binding or Ribbon for ties – approximately 2 yards will be sufficient for all sizes for shaped or pleated options. You could also use any stretch fabric to create ties.
