- +Preparation
- You will need woven or non-stretch fabric for the Doll bodies, Clothing, Hair, Cat/Dog bodies, and Angel Wings. Cotton or quilting cotton, medium or light weight denim, or flannelette are great options.
- TIP – Fuzzy fabrics that look like your pet can also be used.
- Detail Fabrics – These are the fabrics for the little details on the Dolls (e.g., the glasses, the Cat/Dog nose etc.). The edges of these are not finished so we recommend a non-fraying fabric such as felt. You will need assorted colors in scrap size. Many stores sell felt packs, or it is a great one to raid your stash for.
- Stuffing, poly-fil for stuffing inside the finished toy. Make sure to use a filling which is non-flammable, and age & safety appropriate for the person who will be using or receiving the toy.
- The amounts listed below are for sewing one piece. Multiply the total by the number of pieces you would like to create.
- You can do it in any colors you like.
- Ultra-firm heavyweight stabilizer e.g. Peltex 72F or Vilene S133. Approximately ¼ yd is enough for the Angel Wings.
- Human Eyes – Choose One
- OPTIONAL – Safety Eyes
- OPTIONAL – Heat Transfer Vinyl
- OPTIONAL – ½ to ¾ inch wide Button x2
- OPTIONAL – paint or fabric marker
- OPTIONAL – Felt x1 – 9×12 inch sheet
- OPTIONAL – Embroidery floss
- Cat/Dog Eyes – Choose One
- OPTIONAL – Safety Eyes
- OPTIONAL – Heat Transfer Vinyl
- OPTIONAL – ½ to ¾ inch wide Button x2
- OPTIONAL – paint or fabric marker
- OPTIONAL – Adhesive felt x1 9×12 inch sheet
- OPTIONAL – Fusible webbing e.g., Pellon 805 Wonder-Under, ‘heat n bond’, ‘bondaweb’, fusible web or iron-on adhesive. You will need this if you are making the Human Dolls. Approximately 1 yard will be sufficient for one doll. Alternatively, you can use fabric glue to stick your pieces down.

Our Facebook group is a great place to get help, share your tips and creations! We are a friendly bunch, and we love to help and see what you have made.
Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.
Please follow this video for information and assistance on assembling this pattern.
Also, please note that some Rebecca Page patterns and projects also come with cut files and a printable design page which you can use to plan your project if you wish. These are provided in a separate section below to avoid any confusion!

File Types
We have included three to four file types for you to choose from. Please choose whichever you are more familiar with or works best with your cutting machine. For cut files of the smaller pieces for some of our patterns, like the Dolls House Quiet Book and Add-on, we do not include a PDF copy. All versions come with .SVG, .PNG, and .DXF.
You will start by downloading the files from your account. Open your software and choose the file type you’d like to work with.
Pattern Cut Files
When working with cut files to cut small pattern pieces, it is imperative that you make sure the file is the correct size prior to cutting. We have included a one-inch square box offset in each file. You should be able to move the square off to the side, so it isn’t cut with the rest of your file. For files that also have square pieces, please be sure to compare them to the cut chart in the original file instructions. We’d always prefer you double check than have something cut out that isn’t useable!
Other Cut Files
For all other cut files, you should resize to your project needs. Please do keep in mind the size of some of the features. Going very small may make it difficult to cut smaller fonts or finer details.
Media
As mentioned earlier, it is very important to choose the correct media to for your cut. There is a huge selection to choose from and it can be overwhelming. Be sure to use the materials suggested by your machine for the type of project you are completing.

NOTE – To cut fabric on the fold, fold your fabric over parallel to the selvage edges. Align the pattern piece so it is on the fold of the fabric. Cut around the edges, leaving the fold. If you have folded your fabric correctly the fold will be parallel to the two edges of the fabric that are finished. The raw edges (e.g. the ones you could pick at and threads would come off) will be at a right angle to your fold.
- You will need woven or non-stretch fabric for the Doll bodies, Clothing, Hair, Cat/Dog bodies, and Angel Wings. Cotton or quilting cotton, medium or light weight denim, or flannelette are great options.

¼ inch seam allowance included – Top stitching ⅛ inch
0.0There are many ways to appliqué. We are leaving the edges raw in this tutorial, and then stitching down. If you have a preferred method, please use this. Alternatively, there are four options below to choose from.
TIP – Use an open toe foot as it allows you to see where you are stitching.
0.1 . Straight Stitch Appliqué0.1.0This is the quickest and easiest method of appliqué. Use your machines default applique setting if it has one.
0.1.1Apply fusible webbing to the back of the fabric appliqué.
TIP – Use the manufacturer’s instructions for ironing in place. We would also suggest you place a pressing cloth between the fabric and your iron to protect your iron. Occasionally the glue used in the interfacing can leak out and can mark your iron. If you do not have a pressing cloth, a clean, thin tea towel or scrap of 100% cotton can suffice.
0.1.2Place the appliqué onto the fabric as desired. Press.
0.1.3Starting on a straight edge, align the edge of the fabric with the middle of the foot.
0.1.4Pull the bobbin thread to the top.
0.1.5Holding both threads taut, stitch along the edge of the appliqué using ⅛ inch seam allowance.
When you have finished stitching around the appliqué, lift the needle and pull the fabric away until there is approximately 2-inch tail of thread. Clip the thread.
Pull all the thread to the wrong side of the fabric. Tie the threads into a knot. Repeat to tie a second knot. Clip off the extra thread.
0.2 . Zigzag Stitch Appliqué0.2.0A narrow zig zag stitch is almost an invisible stitch that secures the edges of the applique. Choose a longer stitch length between 0.5 and 1.5, and a narrower stitch width between 0.7 and 1.5. Decide which stitch length you prefer and write them down.
0.2.1Apply fusible webbing to the back of the fabric applique.
0.2.2Place the applique onto the fabric as desired. Press.
0.2.3Starting on a straight edge, align the edge of the fabric with the middle of the foot.
0.2.4Pull the bobbin thread to the top.
0.2.5Holding both threads taut, stitch along the edge of the appliqué.
0.2.6The right swing of the needle will be on the background fabric just on the outside of the applique.
0.2.7On the left swing of the needle, the needle will land just inside of the appliqué.
0.2.8Repeat steps 0.2.5 to 0.2.7 around the appliqué.
TIP – When turning around the appliqué, the needle needs to be on the right swing and on the outside of the appliqué.
TIP – For an extra safe finish pull threads to wrong side, tie, clip and add a dot of Fray Check. The Fray Check will stay soft if a hot iron is placed on it.
0.3 . Satin Stitch Appliqué0.3.0A satin stitch is a zig zag stitch that is close together, so you are unable to see the background fabric. If your machine has a satin stitch setting, select that setting. The ideal stitch settings are stitch length 0.2 to 0.5, and stitch width between 2.0 to 4.0. Decide which setting you prefer and write them down.
0.3.1Apply fusible webbing to the back of the fabric applique.
0.3.2Place the applique onto the fabric as desired. Press.
0.3.3Starting on a straight edge, align the edge of the fabric with the middle of the foot.
0.3.4Pull the bobbin thread to the top.
0.3.5Holding both threads taut, stitch along the edge of the appliqué.
0.3.6The right swing of the needle will be on the background fabric just on the outside of the applique.
0.3.7On the left swing of the needle, the needle will land as far inside of the applique as you’ve set the stitch width to be.
0.3.8Repeat steps 0.3.5 to 0.3.7 around the applique.
TIP – When turning around the applique or pivoting at a corner on an outside curve, the needle needs to be on the right swing and on the outside of the applique.
TIP – When turning or pivoting on an inside curve, the needle needs to be on the left swing and the inside of the applique.
TIP – For an extra safe finish pull threads to wrong side, tie, clip and add a dot of Fray Check. The Fray Check will stay soft if a hot iron is placed on it.
0.4 . PREPARATION0.4.0Pattern Markings
Transfer all pattern markings to the fabric using a disappearing ink pen or tailors chalk.
1.1 . SECTION 1 - PEOPLE - Doll Front1.1.1Hair: Place the Hair onto the Body of the doll, align with the raw edges. Pin.
TIP – Iron fusible webbing onto the back of the Hair using the manufacturer’s instructions. Then remove the paper backing and place the Hair onto the Body of the doll and iron in place.
TIP – If not using fusible webbing, baste all the way around the outer edge of the hair using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
TIP – Basting is just like normal stitching except the stitches need to be long and loose so that they can be removed later, if needed. Stitch within the seam allowance, so that the basting stitches are not seen in the final garment, while keeping the stitches loose enough to pull out just in case they are visible. The purpose is to hold a piece of fabric in place until that section is properly sewn. Set the machine to a long loose stitch. Test it on a piece of fabric first to make sure that the stitches can easily be removed. Do not backstitch at either end. Leave the ends loose, with approximately 1 inch of thread tails at either end of the stitching.
1.1.2Clothing: Lay the Clothing onto the front of the Body. Pin.
NOTE – If using a two-piece outfit, the fabric will overlap. The photo shows the pants/skirt fabric over the shirt; however it does not matter which layer is on top.
TIP – Iron fusible webbing onto the back of the Clothing, then iron the Clothing to the body.
1.1.3Appliqué the Hair and Clothing onto the doll using your preferred method of appliqué.
If using a cotton fabric, you will need to use a zig zag, or satin stitch to cover the raw edge.
If you would prefer to use felt for any part of the doll, it will not be necessary to use a zig zag stitch, as the raw edges of felt will not fray.
If using felt, stitch along the hairline using a straight stitch and a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
TIP – The zig zag stitch should cover the raw edges. All sewing machines allow for adjusting the width and length of zig zag stitches. Test your zig zag on a piece of scrap fabric before, to find the setting that will work best for this project.
For the OPTIONAL Glasses, follow below.
If NOT adding the OPTIONAL Glasses, skip to step 1.3.1.
1.2 . OPTIONAL Glasses1.2.0NOTES
Skip to step 1.2.3 if you are adding the Glasses using OPTIONAL heat transfer vinyl.
Skip to step 1.2.4 if you are adding the Glasses using OPTIONAL paint/draw.
Skip to step 1.2.5 if you are adding the Glasses using OPTIONAL felt.
If you are adding the Glasses, using OPTIONAL fabric, follow below.
1.2.1OPTIONAL Fabric Glasses:
If adding OPTIONAL Fabric Glasses, pin the Glasses to the desired location.
TIP – We suggest using felt for the glasses if sewn on so that there is not a concern regarding fraying.
1.2.21.2.3OPTIONAL Heat Transfer Vinyl – Place the Glasses in the desired position. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, use heat to apply.
1.2.4OPTIONAL Paint/Draw – Using paint or a suitable fabric marker, add glasses.
TIP – Use a disappearing ink pen or tailors’ chalk to decide exactly where you want the glasses.
1.2.5OPTIONAL Felt – Using fusible webbing or fabric glue, attach glasses to the desired location.
TIP – For extra stability, stitch the glasses on using your machine or by hand stitching.
1.3 . Doll Back1.3.1Hair: Align the back of Hair to the Back Body, making sure the raw edges are lined up. Pin.
TIP – Iron fusible webbing onto the back of the Hair, then iron the Hair to the body.
1.3.2Clothing – Lay the upper half of the clothing onto the Doll. The raw edges of the fabric used for the hair should be concealed underneath the upper raw edge of the clothing. Pin.
TIP – Iron fusible webbing onto the back of the Clothing, then iron the Clothing to the body.
1.3.3Appliqué the Hair and Clothing onto the doll using your preferred method of appliqué.
1.4 . OPTIONAL Ponytails/Pigtails/Buns1.4.0If you are adding OPTIONAL Ponytails, Pigtails or Buns, follow below. If not, skip to step 1.5.1.
1.4.1Place Ponytail/Pigtail/Bun pieces right sides together. Pin.
1.4.2Stitch the sides, using a ¼ inch seam allowance. Leave the edge that will be attached to the doll open for turning.
1.4.3Trim the corners and make clip into the seam allowance. Be careful not to cut into the seam.
1.4.4Turn Ponytail/Pigtail/Bun right side out and press.
1.4.5If desired, pleat or gather the end.
1.4.6Align the raw edge of the Ponytail/Pigtail/Bun onto the raw edge of the Head. Pin.
1.4.7Baste the Ponytail/Pigtail/Bun to Head using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
1.5 . Doll Assembly1.5.1Place the Front and Back of the Doll right sides together, aligning the edges of the doll. Pin.
TIP – Align the zig zag stitches on the clothing.
1.5.2Stitch using a ¼ inch seam allowance, leaving an approximately 2 to 3-inch gap at the side of the doll for turning.
1.5.3Trim the extra fabric around corners and snip into the seam allowance around the curves. Be careful not to cut into the seam.
1.5.4Turn the Doll right side out. Use a blunt object, like a chopstick to push the seam all the way out.
1.6 . Eyes1.6.0Eyes can either be added before or after stuffing your doll and there are advantages to both methods. Note that if you add the eyes before stuffing the dolls, the eye placement may look slightly different after it has been stuffed. If you are going to use safety eyes, you will need to add them before stuffing the doll. All other methods can be completed either before or after.
If you are adding Eyes before stuffing, follow below. If you are adding Eyes after stuffing, complete your doll in step 1.7 and then choose the method for the Eyes from step 1.6.
Skip to step 1.6.2 if you are adding the Eyes using OPTIONAL Heat Transfer Vinyl.
Skip to step 1.6.3 if you are adding the Eyes using OPTIONAL Buttons.
Skip to step 1.6.4 if you are adding the Eyes using OPTIONAL paint/draw.
If you are adding OPTIONAL Glasses, using Safety Eyes, follow below.
1.6.1OPTIONAL Safety Eyes – If adding safety eyes, attach the safety eyes where the eyes will be placed following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Make a very small hole where the eyes will be placed, push the end of the safety eye through the hole, then add the back.
1.6.2OPTIONAL Heat Transfer Vinyl – Place the eyes in the desired position. Then, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, use heat to apply.
1.6.3OPTIONAL Buttons – Place the buttons as desired, then stitch onto the doll.
1.6.4OPTIONAL Paint/Draw – Using paint or a suitable fabric marker, add eyes.
TIP – Use a disappearing ink pen or tailors’ chalk to decide exactly where you want the eyes and how big you want them.
1.7 . Finishing the Body1.7.1Using the gap on the side, stuff your Doll to desired fullness.
1.7.2Use a slipstitch (also called a ‘ladder stitch’) to stitch the gap closed.
Fold your fabric under by ¼ inch. You will be stitching along this folded edge.
Thread your needle, tying the two thread tail ends together in a knot. This will provide added strength to your finished seam.
Push your needle up from the inside of the doll to the outside, through one of the folds, pulling the thread tail completely through. Your knotted end will now be nicely concealed within the seam on the inside.
Directly across from your starting point, push the needle down and then back up through the opposite seam fold to create a stitch that is between ¼ – ½ inch long. When you pull the thread through, you will notice that the stitch you just made is concealed within the seam crease, and there will be a horizontal stitch connecting the left and right sides of your opening.
Pull the thread through so that it is taut.
Your Doll is now finished!
2.1 . SECTION 2 - CATS AND DOGS - OPTIONAL Nose2.1.0You can choose from several options to add the Nose. If you add a safety nose, vinyl, paint, or button nose, you can add them now or later, as the very last step.
Skip to step 2.1.2 if you are adding the Nose using OPTIONAL heat transfer vinyl.
Skip to step 2.1.3 if you are adding the Nose using an OPTIONAL button nose.
Skip to step 2.1.4 if you are adding the Nose using OPTIONAL paint/draw.
Skip to step 2.1.5 if you are adding the Nose using OPTIONAL felt.
If you are adding the OPTIONAL Nose using a safety nose, follow below.
2.1.1OPTIONAL Safety Nose – Repeat 1.6.1 to add the safety nose.
2.1.2OPTIONAL Heat Transfer Vinyl – Repeat step 1.6.2 to add the OPTIONAL heat transfer vinyl Nose.
2.1.3OPTIONAL Button Nose – Repeat step 1.6.3 to add the OPTIONAL button Nose. Place the buttons as desired, then stitch onto the doll.
2.1.4OPTIONAL Paint/Draw – Repeat step 1.6.4 to OPTIONAL paint/draw the Nose on.
2.1.5OPTIONAL Felt – Pin the felt Nose as desired onto the front of the Cat/Dog.
2.1.6Stitch using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
2.2 . OPTIONAL Ears2.2.1Place the Inner Ear onto the Outer Ear. Pin.
2.2.2Stitch using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
2.2.3Place the Front and Back Ears right sides together and pin.
2.2.4Using a ¼ inch seam allowance, stitch around the top of the Ear, making sure to leave the bottom straight edge open for turning.
2.2.5Trim the top of the Ear. Make sure to not get too close to the seam. Clip notches along the curves on both edges of the Ear. Be careful not to cut into the stitching.
TIP – Use pinking shears to trim the seam allowance.
2.2.6Turn Ear right side out and press.
Repeat steps 2.2.1 to 2.2.6 to create the second Ear.
2.3 . Assembly2.3.1Place the Ears to the Front right sides together matching the raw edges. Pin.
OPTIONAL – Baste Ears using a less than ¼ inch seam allowance.
2.3.2Place the Back on top right sides together with the Front piece. Pin.
2.3.3Stitch around the Cat/Dog using a ¼ inch seam allowance, leaving a 3-inch gap on the bottom for turning.
2.3.4Trim the extra fabric around curved edges, and clip notches around the curves by snipping into the seam allowance making sure to not cut into the stitch.
2.3.5Turn the Cat/Dog right side out. Use a blunt object such as a knitting needle or point turner and push the seam all the way out.
TIP – The tails, especially on the cat, can be challenging to turn. Turning these slowly. It will likely be necessary to work on the turning from the outside of the cat, rolling the tail out slowly. If you push the tail out from the inside of the cat it may become stuck due to its length, if this happens move to turning it from the outside.
2.4 . Eyes2.4.0Eyes can either be added before or after stuffing your Cat/Dog and there are advantages to both methods. Note that if you add the eyes before stuffing the dolls, the eye placement may look slightly different after it has been stuffed. If you are going to use safety eyes, they need to be added before stuffing the doll. All other methods can be completed either before or after.
If you are adding Eyes before stuffing, follow below. If you are adding Eyes after stuffing, skip to Section 2 step 5 Finishing the Cat/Dog, then choose the method for the Eyes from Section 2 step 4 Eyes.
Skip to step 2.4.2 if you are adding the Eyes using OPTIONAL heat transfer vinyl.
Skip to step 2.4.3 if you are adding the Eyes using OPTIONAL buttons.
Skip to step 2.4.4 if you are adding the Eyes using OPTIONAL paint/draw.
If you are adding OPTIONAL Safety Eyes, follow bellow.
2.4.1OPTIONAL Safety Eyes – If adding safety eyes mark where the eyes will be placed, then make a very small hole at the mark. Push the end of the safety eye through the hole starting at the right side of the Cat/Dog, then and add the back.
Repeat with the second Eye.
2.4.2OPTIONAL Heat Transfer Vinyl – Place the eyes in the desired position. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, use heat to apply.
Repeat with the second Eye.
2.4.3OPTIONAL Buttons – Hand stitch the buttons onto the doll.
Repeat with the second Eye.
2.4.4OPTIONAL Paint/Draw – Using paint or a fabric marker, add eyes.
Repeat with the second Eye.
TIP – Use a disappearing ink pen or tailors’ chalk to decide exactly where you want the eyes and how big you want them.
2.5 . Finishing the Cat/Dog2.5.1Using the gap on the bottom, stuff your cat/dog to the desired fullness.
2.5.2Use a slipstitch (also called a ‘ladder stitch’) to stitch the gap closed.
Fold your fabric under by ¼ inch. You will be stitching along this folded edge.
Thread your needle, tying the two thread tail ends together in a knot. This will provide added strength to your finished seam.
Push your needle up from the inside of the cat/dog to the outside, through one of the folds, pulling the thread tail completely through.
If adding the OPTIONAL Angel Wings continue to step 2.6.
Your Cat/Dog is now finished!
2.6 . OPTIONAL Angel Wings2.6.1Iron the interfacing to the Angel Wings. Then place the Angel Wings wrong sides together.
TIP – Use fusible webbing to add the fabric to the backside of the Angel Wings.
2.6.2Use a zig zag stitch around the edges of the Angel Wings to conceal the raw edges.
2.6.3Attach the Angel Wings using your favorite hand stitching technique.
Your Cat/Dog with Angel Wings is finished!

Cut Files

Project Overview
Family Portrait Dolls
Difficulty Level = Beginner
These dolls are a fun way for everyone in the family to have a doll that looks like them. With three different size dolls, facial hair, and styles of glasses, each doll can be customized to be just like the entire family. Even the pets can have their own look alike doll with both cat and dog options.
