Project OverviewFelt Wings
Difficulty Level = Beginner
These easy to sew felt wings are the perfect accessory to a fancy dress outfit. There are four feather shapes, and you can mix and match the wing shape and size to make the wings of almost every creature.
Our Facebook group is a great place to get help, share your tips and creations! We are a friendly bunch, and we love to help and see what you have made.
Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

These felt wings are super easy to make and have such an impact. There are three sizes included:
There are also cutting instructions how to make them to fit your model. Custom wings for any age from baby to adult!
There are 4 feather shapes so you can make almost any winged creature you fancy! Think bird, parrot, hawk or even a dragon, hippogriff, Pegasus, thunderbird, or winged unicorn!
The feathers come in 3 sizes (small, medium, and large like the wing shapes). Any of the feather and wing sizes can be mix and matched. So, you could use lots of small feathers on a large wing for more of a ‘scales’ type look. Or you could even mix and match the sizes and do a gradient from large at the base up to small near the arm. It’s totally up to you!
Materials and ToolsMain fabric – Any light or medium weight woven fabric such as cotton or quilting cotton. Not suitable for knit/stretch fabric.
Lining fabric – You will need a light or medium weight woven fabric.
Feathers – We used felt but you could use nearly any non-fraying fabric like leather or fleece. Alternatively, you could use a regular woven and just finish the edges. The yardage will depend on how tightly you pack the feathers and the mix of sizes you use (you can mix and match the feather sizes provided or just use one size like in the tutorial).

Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.
Please follow this video for information and assistance on assembling this pattern.
Also, please note that some Rebecca Page patterns and projects also come with cut files and a printable design page which you can use to plan your project if you wish. These are provided in a separate section below to avoid any confusion!

Wing Base
For the best fitting wings, measure a custom wing size for the age and size of the child (or adult) you are making it for.You will need the following 4 measurements:
A – Measure from armpit to wrist
B – Measure from armpit to waist Using your A & B measurements, draw a rectangle. A is the long side, B is the short side. Then, from the top of one short side, draw a curve from the top corner, towards the centre of the bottom line. You could make the wing any shape or height you like, but for the pictured design, draw approximately along the blue line. If you want the wing to be quite long, simply make the rectangle taller before you draw the blue line.If you do not have a model available, there are approximate sized pattern pieces included:
Feathers
Choose a feather shape. There are 4 shapes provided. Pick the one or ones that best suit the creature or type of wing you’re wanting to make.
Cut feathers using the template(s) provided, or use your own design. You can mix and match the 3 sizes provided or just use one size. Or choose one size based on your child’s age (small for children under 2, medium for 2-6 years and large for 6-12 years). I used 21 medium feathers per wing for a 6 year old model. For a more full wing, or all smaller feathers, you might find you’d like significantly more than that. You can choose which ever shape/s of feather you want for the design you are creating.
Straps
Again you can either use the pattern pieces provided, or measure these to fit.You will need the following measurements if you want to make them to fit:
C – Bicep circumference
D – Wrist circumferenceTo measure to fit:
Cutting checklist:
NOTE – To cut fabric on the fold, fold your fabric over parallel to the selvage edges. Align the pattern piece so it is on the fold of the fabric. Cut around the edges, leaving the fold. If you have folded your fabric correctly the fold will be parallel to the two edges of the fabric that are finished. The raw edges (e.g. the ones you could pick at and threads would come off) will be at a right angle to your fold.
- + Instructions
- PREPARE THE STRAPS – Fold each short edge in ½ inch and press. Fold Strap piece in half along long edge with wrong sides facing and press. Fold each long raw edge in towards the middle fold line and press. Topstitch around each side of Strap. Attach the Velcro hook and eye. Sew the hook tape to one end of the Strap, then turn the Strap over and sew the eye tape to the other end. Repeat for all Straps.
- MAKE THE WING BASE – Attach the wadding to the wrong side of the lining pieces. Iron or baste ¼ inch from the edge the wadding according to manufacturer’s instructions. To attach the Straps, measure along the top edge, 2 inches in from short edge of the lining piece and mark with a pin or notch, this will be for Strap 1 and repeat at curved edge end of the top side, this is for Strap 2. Fold Strap 1 in half and line the fold of the Strap with raw edge of long side at notch, repeat for Strap 2. Baste on to the lining. Repeat for the other wing. To construct the wings, place the main piece and lining piece right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving a gap of 3 inches on the short straight side (this will be used to turn out the right way). Be sure to keep the Straps away from the seam allowance. Clip each corner and notch the curved edges, taking care not to clip into seams. Turn out through the 3 inch gap and, using a blunt object, carefully poke corners out completely. Press well. There are several methods you can choose from to close the turning gap: A. Top stitch around the entire wing, which gives a ‘finished’ look and helps to keep the shape. (Method used in this example) B. Top stitch just the gap about ⅛ inch from the edge. C. Hand stitch, using a ladder stitch, which is unseen to secure the Straps, with lining side facing up, take one side of bicep Strap and pin to wing. Measure 2 inches from the edge and sew a straight line across the Strap, securing it to the wing. Take one side of wrist Strap and pin to wing. Measure 1 ½ inches from the edge and sew a straight line across the Strap, securing it to the wing. Repeat for the other wing.
- ATTACH THE FEATHERS – Arrange your feathers in color order on the main side of the wing. This is completely up to your creative preference; random colors, lines of colors, graduating shades etc. and pin in place. Sew the top of each feather to the main side of your wing. Repeat on other wing.
Quick Glance Cheat Sheet¼ inch seam allowance, unless otherwise stated
Sewing –
1 . Prepare the StrapsSeam Allowance
¼ inch seam allowance, unless otherwise stated
1.1Fold each short edge in ½ inch and press.
Fold Strap piece in half along long edge with wrong sides facing and press. Fold each long raw edge in towards the middle fold line and press.
1.2Topstitch around all four sides of Strap.
1.3Attach the Velcro hook and eye. Sew the hook tape to one end of the Strap, then turn the Strap over and sew the eye tape to the other end.
Repeat for all Straps.
2 . Make the Wing Base2.1Attach the wadding to the wrong side of the Wing Base Lining pieces. Iron or baste ¼ inch from edge, the wadding according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Baste onto the lining.
TIP – Basting is just like normal stitching except the stitches need to be long and loose so that they can be removed later, if needed. Stitch within the seam allowance, so that the basting stitches are not seen in the final garment, while keeping the stitches loose enough to pull out just in case they are visible. The purpose is to hold a piece of fabric in place until that section is properly sewn. Set the machine to a long loose stitch. Test it on a piece of fabric first to make sure that the stitches can easily be removed. Do not backstitch at either end. Leave the ends loose, with approximately 1 inch of thread tails at either end of the stitching.
Repeat for the other Wing Base Lining.
2.2To construct the wings, place the main piece and lining piece right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving a gap of 3 inches on the short straight side (this will be used to turn out the right way).
Be sure to keep the Straps away from the seam allowance.
2.3Clip each corner and notch the curved edges, taking care not to clip into seams.
2.4Turn out through the 3 inches gap and using a blunt object, carefully poke corners out completely. Press well.
2.5There are several methods you can choose from to close the turning gap:
a. Top stitch around the entire wing, which gives a ‘finished’ look and helps to keep the shape. (Method used in this example)
b. Top stitch just the gap about ⅛ inch from the edge.
c. Hand stitch, using a ladder stitch, which is unseen.
2.6To secure the Straps, with lining side facing up, take one side of the bicep Strap and pin to wing. Measure 2 inches from the edge and sew a straight line across the Strap, securing it to the wing.
2.7Take one side of wrist Strap and pin to wing. Measure 1 ½ inches from the edge and sew a straight line across the Strap, securing it to the wing.
Repeat for the other wing.
3 . Attach the Feathers3.1Arrange your feathers in color order on the main side of the wing. This is completely up to your creative preference; random colors, lines of colors, graduating shades etc. and pin in place.
3.2Sew the top of each feather to the main side of your wing. Repeat on other wing.
If you pay attention to the types of lines you are sewing, you can create a beautiful quilted design on the back.
