Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Width Length Main Purse 9.75 11 Materials and ToolsYou will need a medium weight woven or non-stretch fabric. Cotton, quilting cotton, denim, canvas, cotton lawn, or upholstery fabric will work for your outer or lining fabrics.

** Make sure to wash, dry, and press all fabrics before cutting out in case they shrink.
*** If you are using a narrower fabric and would like to make the strap in the same fabric, cut two Adjustable Strap pieces with ½ inch added on the folded edge. Piece them together with a ½ inch seam allowance. Then construct per the instructions.
You will also need:
Tools needed are, sewing machine, pins, scissors, tape measure or ruler. Serger/overlocker is optional but not required.
Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.

Pattern Purse 2-3, 5 Outer Pocket 3-4 Ring Tab 4 OPTIONAL Inner Pocket 5 Gusset 6-9 Adjustable Strap 6-9 Cutting InstructionsCut each of the pieces according to the directions on the pattern piece. Seam allowances are all included so just cut them as is.
Cutting Charts – All pattern pieces are included, however if you prefer to cut using a cutting chart, the dimensions for the rectangular pieces (in INCHES) are below:

NOTE – To cut fabric on the fold, fold your fabric over parallel to the selvage edges. Align the pattern piece so it is on the fold of the fabric. Cut around the edges, leaving the fold. If you have folded your fabric correctly the fold will be parallel to the two edges of the fabric that are finished. The raw edges (e.g. the ones you could pick at and threads would come off) will be at a right angle to your fold.

- Interfacing – Using manufacturer’s instructions, apply interfacing to all pieces. If desired, trim seam allowance before application to reduce bulk.
- Outer Pocket – Place two Outer Pocket pieces right sides together and sew around outside edge with ½ inch seam allowance leaving a 3-inch gap for turning. Trim seam allowance, clip curves, and snip into top point. Turn right sides out and press. Center Outer Pocket onto main one Purse piece. Pin or use wonder tape to secure, then topstitch from bottom point 6 ½ inches up each side.
- Inner Pocket – Place two Inner Pocket pieces right sides together and sew around outside edges with ½ inch seam allowance leaving a 4-inch gap along bottom edge for turning. Trim seam allowance and clip corners. Turn right sides out and press. Topstitch ⅛ inch from bottom edge. Center Inner Pocket 1 inch below the top V point and topstitch along the sides and bottom.
- Gusset – Fold Ring Tab right sides together. Pin and sew both short edges. Trim seam allowance, turn right side out and press. Push raw edges to inside by ½ inch. Topstitch along all four edges. Slide through D-ring and align one edge 1 ½ inches from bottom edge. Sew a ½ inch box to secure. Center Ring Tab 2 ½ inches from one short edge of Gusset. Sew a ½ inch box to secure. Repeat for second Ring Tab.
- Purse Body – Fold short edges of Gusset 1 inch to the wrong side and press. Mark center point of Gusset. Match center of Gusset with ½ inch seam allowance at bottom of main Purse front. Pin up side edge until you reach the pressed fold at the top of the Gusset. Stitch with ½ inch seam allowance. Do not stitch the 1 inch fold at the top of the Gusset. Repeat for second side. Repeat for Purse back piece and one Purse lining. Repeat alignment steps for second Purse lining piece. Stitch 3 inches on both sides closest to the top of the Gusset. Turn main and lining right sides out and press.
- Attaching Lining to Main – Align main and lining right sides together along top curved edges. Stitch with a ½ inch seam allowance. Do not stitch Gusset edges. Clip curves. Turn lining wrong sides out and slide outer Purse inside lining, right sides together. Align top curved edges. Stitch with a ½ inch seam allowance. Do not stitch Gusset edges. Clip curves. Pull lining away from main. Press opening ½ inch to the wrong side. Align lining Purse and Gusset as in Purse Body steps and edge stitch opening closed. Push lining into main. Align top edges of Gusset on both sides. Topstitch along top edge of Purse ⅛ inch from edge. Press.
- Adjustable Straps – Press Strap as bias tape. Open up Strap and fold right sides together at each short end. Stitch with a ½ inch seam allowance. Trim seam allowance and clip corners. Turn right sides out and refold pressed lines. Stitch along all four edges, stitching in the same direction for each long edge. Attach Strap to slider and both swivel clasps. Clip to D-rings. Congratulations! Your Heart Purse is complete!

0.1Interfacing
Using the manufacturer’s instructions, apply the iron-on interfacing to all pieces.
NOTE – If your interfacing is thick, like flex foam, or if you would like to reduce bulk, trim off ½ inch seam allowance all the way around before applying interfacing.
1 . Outer Pocket1.1Place two Outer Pocket pieces right sides together and pin or clip around outside edges.
1.2Sew around outside of Outer Pocket using a ½ inch seam allowance, leaving a 3-inch gap along one side.
TIP – When you reach the tip at the top and bottom of the heart, leave your needle down, lift your presser foot, and rotate the heart as needed to change direction.
1.3Trim seam allowance to ¼ inch, except where you left the gap, clip curves.
Snip a V shape at the top point, clipping close to, but not through the stitch line.
1.4Turn right sides out and press.
Topstitch ⅛ inch from edge all the way around the heart. This will close the gap left in step 1.2.
1.5Center Outer Pocket on one main Purse piece.
1.6Use pins or wonder tape to secure in place.
1.7Starting from the bottom point, topstitch 6 ½ inches up one side edge, ⅛ from the edge of the pocket. Secure with backstitching at each end.
1.8Repeat step 1.7 for second side.
2 . Inner Pocket2.1Place two Inner Pocket pieces right sides together and pin around all four edges.
2.2Sew around outside of Inner Pocket using a ½ inch seam allowance, leaving a 4-inch gap along bottom edge.
2.3Trim seam allowance and clip corners.
2.4Turn right sides out and press.
Topstitch ⅛ inch from bottom edge. This will close the gap left in step 2.2.
2.5Center the Inner Pocket 1” below the top V point and pin in place.
2.6Topstitch ⅛ inch from both side edges and bottom edges.
3 . Gusset3.1On one Ring Tab, fold in half right sides together, aligning long raw edges.
Pin or clip short edges.
3.2Sew each short edge using a ½ inch seam allowance.
3.3Trim seam allowance approximately in half.
Turn right sides out, poking out the corners with a blunt object. Press.
3.4Push raw edges on long side ½ inch toward the inside of the Ring Tab. Press.
3.5Topstitch ⅛ inch around all four sides, closing the open edge from step 3.4.
3.6Slide D-ring onto Ring Tab and align finished edge of top fold 1 ½ inches from bottom edge.
3.7Sew a ½ inch box shape though all layers to secure the D-ring on the Ring Tab.
TIP – Sew an X in the middle of the box to add support.
3.8Align bottom edge of Ring Tab 2 ½ inches from one short edge of Gusset, centered between long edges.
Use pins or wonder tape to secure in place.
3.9Sew a ½ inch box shape though all layers to secure the D-ring on the Ring Tab.
3.10Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.9 for second Ring Tab on opposite end of Gusset.
4 . Purse Body4.1Fold Short edge of Gusset to wrong side by 1 inch. Press.
Repeat for second short edge.
4.2Mark center point along both long edges of Gusset.
4.3Aligning at the ½ inch seam allowance, match the center point of the Gusset with the bottom point of the Purse, right sides together.
Pin or clip in place.
Continue pinning the Gusset to the Purse along one side, matching at the ½ inch seam allowance, all the way up to the press line from step 4.1.
4.4Sew Gusset to Purse along one side, starting at the bottom point, up to the press line from step 4.1.
Do not stitch down the top 1 inch of the gusset.
OPTIONAL – Stitch another row, just inside the seam allowance to reinforce the stitches.
TIP – Clip curve up to but not through the stitch line for a neater finish.
4.5Repeat steps 4.3 to 4.4 for the opposite side of the Purse. Starting at the bottom point and making sure each edge is even.
4.6Repeat steps 4.3 to 4.5 for the Purse back.
4.7Turn purse right side out, using a blunt tool to push out the tip and smooth the seam line.
TIP – If your interfacing is prone to wrinkling, you can stuff your purse now and give it a good press with a dry iron can help remove wrinkles.
4.8Repeat steps 4.1 to 4.5 for Purse lining.
TIP – For a better fit, start sewing at the tip using a ¾ inch seam allowance, and ease toward the end at the top of the bag with a ½ inch seam allowance. This makes the lining just slightly shorter and smaller than the outer Purse.
4.9Repeat steps 4.3 to 4.5 for the opposite side of the Purse, only sewing the top three inches on each side of the Gusset.
This leaves the bottom of the Purse lining open for sewing in the next steps.
4.10Turn lining right sides out and press.
5 . Attaching Lining to Main5.1Align the top, curved edge of Purse lining to Purse outer, right sides together.
Pin or clip together.
5.2Sew along curved edge of heart at the top of the Purse using a ½ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – When you get to the center point, leave your needle down, lift your presser foot, and turn the Purse to align for the next curve.
Do not sew the top edge of the Gusset ends.
TIP – Clip curve up to but not through the stitch line for a neater finish.
5.3Turning the Lining wrong side out, slide your outer Purse inside your Purse lining, right sides together.
Align the top of the heart on the opposite side of the Purse.
Pin in place.
5.4Sew along curved edge of heart at the top of the Purse using a ½ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – When you get to the center point, leave your needle down, lift your presser foot, and turn the Purse to align for the next curve.
Do not sew the Gusset ends.
TIP – Clip curve up to but not through the stitch line for a neater finish.
5.5Pull the lining off the outer Purse and gentle push out the curves along the top.
5.6Press ½ inch seam allowance along the opening of the Purse lining and Gusset lining.
5.7Align Purse lining and Gusset lining as in step 4.10 for the opening.
Pin or clip along opening.
5.8Sew bottom edge of Purse lining to Gusset lining, using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
5.9Push lining inside main.
Push the top edge of the Gusset inside the Purse and align top, pressed edges.
Pin or clip in place.
Repeat for second side of the Gusset.
5.10Topstitch along top edge of Purse using a ⅛ seam allowance. This will close the gaps at the top edges of the Gusset.
5.11Press the top edge of the Purse.
6 . Adjustable Strap6.0If you are using a narrower fabric and would like to make the strap in the same fabric, cut two Adjustable Strap pieces with ½ inch added on the folded edge. Piece them together with a ½ inch seam allowance. Then construct per the instructions.
6.1If you are familiar with making double fold bias tape, please use this. If not, don’t worry, just follow along here!
Fold the Adjustable Strap in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Press.
6.2Open the Adjustable Strap then fold the two long sides into the middle and press.
Refold the Adjustable Strap along the center edge, folding the raw edges to the inside.
Press again to set the folds.
6.3Open Adjustable Strap and fold right sides together along one short edge.
NOTE – This will be folded the opposite of what we just pressed.
6.4Stitch along short edge with a ½ inch seam allowance.
Clip corners and trim seam allowance to reduce bulk.
6.5Repeat steps 6.3 to 6.4 for opposite short edge.
6.6Turn Adjustable Strap right sides out, refolding along pressed lines and tucking the raw edges inside the strap.
Pin or clip along open edge.
6.7Topstitch ⅛ from each edge.
TIP – Sew one long edge and one short edge, then flip your strap over and sew the opposite short edge and remaining long edge. This will add strength and prevent your strap from twisting due to topstitching.
OPTIONAL – Add additional topstitch lines or decorative stitches along length of strap.
6.8Insert one end of the Adjustable Strap onto the slider, over the center bar, then back out the slider.
Overlap the Adjustable Strap by two inches and pin or clip in place.
Sew a ½ inch box shape though all layers to secure the end of the Adjustable Strap in place.
6.9Pull the opposite end of the Adjustable Strap through a swivel clasp, then back through the slider.
The Adjustable Strap will go over the sewn part in step 6.8.
6.10Then pull the end through the second swivel clasp.
Overlap the Adjustable Strap by two inches and pin or clip in place.
NOTE – Make sure your strap is not twisted before continuing to the next step.
6.11Sew a ½ inch box shape though all layers to secure the end of the Adjustable Strap in place.
6.12Clip your Adjustable Strap to each D-ring on your Purse.
