- Check head size– Check if the headband pattern piece you have printed is the right size for your child by holding it up to their head. If you need it to be smaller or larger, add or remove fabric by making it shorter or longer at the end where it says ‘fold and grainline’. Children’s heads are notoriously different sizes as they grow so I highly recommend you do this step if you have the child it is for available
- If you get stuck with fitting, see our favorite resources on our Pinterest Sewing Fitting Advice board.
- For best results use a woven fabric such as cotton. If you decide to use a knit fabric, you’ll need to size down as the headband will stretch when you put it on.
- Thread to match
- Headband – Fabric cut 2 on fold
Project OverviewThe Knotted Headband
Difficulty Level = Beginner
Sew a quick and easy headband – perfect for beginners. Choose between a straight or bubble headband.
Our Facebook group is a great place to get help, share your tips and creations! We are a friendly bunch, and we love to help and see what you have made.
Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.
Please follow this video for information and assistance on assembling this pattern.
Also, please note that some Rebecca Page patterns and projects also come with cut files and a printable design page which you can use to plan your project if you wish. These are provided in a separate section below to avoid any confusion!

Here are which pages to print for the A4 Files
Straight OPTION Bubble OPTION XS – L 2-3 2-3 Cutting InstructionsCut each of the pieces according to the directions on the pattern piece. Seam allowances are all included so just cut them as is.
You’ll notice on the pattern there are 2 different headband patterns.
Straight OPTION – This is the striped one you’ll see in the photos. It’s just a straight strip of fabric that you tie around the child’s head. It’s great for novice sewers (if this is literally one of your first sews, then this is for you!) and gives a clean cute look.
Bubble OPTION – This headband has a ‘bubble’ at the end of where you tie it. It ends up looking almost like a bow when you tie it. The downside though is you do need to get the head measurement accurate. You want the strip of fabric to tie at the top of the child’s head 1 inch before the “bubble” bit starts.
Cutting Checklist:
NOTE – To cut fabric on the fold, fold your fabric over parallel to the selvage edges. Align the pattern piece so it is on the fold of the fabric. Cut around the edges, leaving the fold. If you have folded your fabric correctly the fold will be parallel to the two edges of the fabric that are finished. The raw edges (e.g. the ones you could pick at and threads would come off) will be at a right angle to your fold.
- + Instructions
- FRONT AND BACK – With right sides together, put both Headband pieces on top of each other. Sew around Headband, leave a 1 inch opening on a straight side.
- TURN AND FINISH – Turn Headband right side out, turn seam allowance of opening under and press. Topstitch all the way around.
Quick Glance Cheat Sheet¼ inch seam allowance included – Top stitching ⅛ inch
Sewing –
1 . Front and BackSeam Allowance
¼ inch seam allowance included – Top stitching ⅛ inch
1.1Place the two Headband pieces so they are right side to right side, on top of each other.
1.2Stitch around your Headband ¼ inch from the raw edges, leaving a gap of 1 inch somewhere on one of the straight edges. This is for turning the headband the right way out.
TIP – Make sure you backstitch at the start and finish of your stitching. When you turn the headband through in the next step, stress will be placed on the edges of the stitching and if you haven’t backstitched it may unravel.
BUBBLE OPTION – If you are doing the bubble option, the process is still the same. Just make sure you leave the gap for turning on the straight part of the Headband.
2 . Turn and Finish2.1Using a blunt thin object (e.g. a blunt chopstick) turn the Headband right way out using the gap you left.
2.2Using your fingertips, press the edges so that the headband is fully turned right way out. You’ll notice the little gap might not sit flat (circled in the photo above). Poke it under with your fingers so that it is in line with the rest of the headband. Once you are happy with it, press with your iron.
2.3Top stitch all the way around the edge (in a full circle) ⅛ inch from the edge.
