Difficulty Level = Beginner
Sew a beautiful set of pillow covers for your bed or sofa. There are three different shapes: rectangle, square and circle, and three sizes: small, medium and large. You can finish them with either a center opening, end opening, ties, buttons or zips. Add optional trims or tassels or an Oxford edging to the large rectangle to really make them your own.

Please read the full instructions before getting started.
Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

Options
There are three shapes and sizes to choose from. The optional extras are only available on specific sizes and shapes. These can be added to most shapes and sizes, except the Tassels cannot be added to a circle pillow. The circle pillow can only be finished with a zipper. The square and rectangle can be finished with any of the below closure options (on specific sizes). See the table below for details. Then select the Pillow Cover you would like to sew.

Materials and ToolsFabric – You can use any woven fabric. You can use a stretch fabric, but the pillow won’t have much structure. You could even upcycle jumpers, scarves or even duvets and tablecloths.

Tools needed are, sewing machine, pins, scissors, tape measure or ruler, a disappearing ink pen or tailors chalk, optional zipper, or invisible zipper foot. Serger/overlocker is optional but not required.
Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.

NOTE – To cut fabric on the fold, fold your fabric over parallel to the selvage edges. Align the pattern piece so it is on the fold of the fabric. Cut around the edges, leaving the fold. If you have folded your fabric correctly the fold will be parallel to the two edges of the fabric that are finished. The raw edges (e.g. the ones you could pick at and threads would come off) will be at a right angle to your fold.
- OPTIONAL Zipper closure. 1x Invisible zipper:

- PATTERN MARKINGS – Transfer all pattern markings.
- OPTIONAL FRILL – Place two Frills right sides together, matching short edges. RECTANGLE – Attach a Short and Long Frill. Pin one short and long pair together. Stitch. CIRCLE – For sizes S-M repeat attaching other short edges of the Frills together, creating a circle. For size L repeat attaching the remaining Frill to the short edges of each Frill, creating a circle. SQUARE – Repeat attaching the short edges of the other two Frill pieces together. RECTANGLE – Repeat attaching a Short Frill to the other short edge of the Long Frill. Then repeat to attach the Long Frill to the short edges of each Short Frill. Press seams open. Fold Frill in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Stitch gathering stitches along raw edge. Find and mark quarter points of Frill and Front Pillow. Lay Front Pillow right side facing up. Place Frill onto Front Pillow, right sides together, matching quarter points. Gently gather Frill in one quarter. Pin. Continue gathering in between each quarter until it is the same length on all sides as the Front Pillow. Baste. Skip to step 6 for the center opening, or step 7 for end opening or step 8 for zip closure.
- OPTIONAL TRIM – Lay Front Pillow right side facing up. Place trim along edges, right sides facing. Baste. Skip to step 6 for the center opening, or step 7 for end opening or step 8 for zip closure.
- OPTIONAL TASSELS – Create four Tassels from yarn or use store bought Tassels. Lay the Front Pillow right side facing up. Place a Tassel at a corner, taking each side of the top thread across to either side of the corner, within the seam allowance. Stitch three to four times. Repeat to attach three Tassels to remaining corners. Skip to step 6 for the center opening, or step 7 for end opening or step 8 for zip closure.
- OPTIONAL TIES – Fold Tie in half lengthwise, right sides Stitch. Pin one short edge and the long raw edge. Turn Tie right way out. Press. OPTIONAL: Topstitch. Repeat for the other five Ties. Lay the Front Pillow right sides facing up. Place three Ties at the pattern markings, right sides together, matching raw edges. Baste. Repeat to attach the other three Ties to the Back Pillow. Skip to step 7 for the end opening.
- OXFORD OPTION – Place a Short Edge and a Long Edge right sides together, matching an angled edge. Stitch. Repeat to attach second pair of Short and Long Edges. Repeat to attach these two pairs together creating an Oxford style ‘frame’. Press seams open. Repeat for a second ‘frame’. Place the two Oxford frames rights sides together, matching outside edges and seams. Stitch. Trim corners. Turn right way out and press. Baste inner edges. Lay Front Pillow right side facing up. Place Oxford piece right sides down, matching inner edge to raw edge. Pin. Make a small snip into each corner. Stitch. Fold one long side of the Front Flap ¼ inch to the wrong side. Press. Repeat. Topstitch. Lay Front Pillow right side facing up. Place long edge of Front Flap onto one short edge of Oxford frame, right sides together. Stitch. Flip the Front Flap over, right side facing up, keeping the Oxford frame right side onto the right side of the Front Pillow. Repeat to attach Back Flap to Back Pillow. Place Front and Back Pillows right sides together. Pin three edges, leaving the edge with the End opening pieces open. Stitch. Lay the Back Pillow wrong side up. Fold the Front Flap at the seam, over the Back Flap, right side of the Front Flap to wrong side of the Back Pillow. Stitch. Zigzag stitch / serge all three edges. Turn right side out.
- CENTER OPENING OPTION – Fold the edge of Center Opening ¼ inch to the wrong side. Press. Repeat. Topstitch. Repeat for other Center Opening. Lay Front Pillow right side facing up. Place one Center Opening piece onto a short side, matching raw edges. Pin. Place second Center Opening onto opposite short edge, matching raw edges. Stitch all four sides. Turn right side out.
- END OPENING OPTION – Fold one long side of a Back Flap ¼ inch to wrong side. Press. Repeat. Topstitch. Repeat on one long edge of Front Flap. Lay Front Pillow right side facing up. Place Front Flap onto left side, right sides facing, matching raw edges. Pin long raw edge. Stitch. Flip Front Flap over to wrong side of Front Pillow. Press. Repeat, pinning long raw edge of the Back Flap to right side of Back Pillow. Place Front and Back Pillows right sides together. Pin three sides, leaving the short side with the End openings unpinned. Stitch. Zigzag stitch / serge all three edges. Flip flaps over to front and stitch down. Turn right side out. BUTTONS – Stitch three buttonholes through Front Pillow and Front Flap. Hand stitch buttons onto Back Flap. Optional topstitch.
- ZIP OPTION – Insert zipper onto Front and Back Pillow. Turn right side out.

0.1Pattern Markings
Transfer all pattern markings to the fabric using a disappearing ink pen or tailors chalk. If you are adding OPTIONAL Ties or Buttons, you will need to mark these placements.
1 . OPTIONAL Frill1.0The Frill can be added to all shapes and sizes. Each shape and size has its own Frill pieces. If you are adding a Frill, follow below.
If you are not adding a Frill, skip to:
SERGER / OVERLOCKER OPTION – Follow step 1.1. Serge using a ½ inch seam allowance. Then follow steps 1.3 to 1.7.
REGULAR SEWING MACHINE OPTION – Follow below.
1.1Place two Frill pieces right sides together, matching short edges. Pin.
RECTANGLE – If you are sewing a Rectangle Pillow Cover you will have Short and Long Frills. Pin one short and long pair together.
1.2Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
CIRCLE – For sizes S-M repeat steps 1.1 to 1.2 attaching the other short edges of the Frills together, creating a circle. For size L repeat steps 1.1 to 1.2 attaching the remaining Frill to the short edges of each Frill, creating a circle.
SQUARE – Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.2 attaching the short edges of the other two Frill pieces together.
RECTANGLE – Repeat steps 1.1 to 1.2 attaching a Short Frill to the other short edge of the Long Frill. Then repeat to attach the Long Frill to the short edges of each Short Frill.
1.3Press all seam allowances open.
1.4Fold the Frill in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Pin.
TIP – Press the fold if you would prefer a less puffy look to your Frill.
1.5Stitch two rows of gathering stitches along the raw edge.
Stitch your first row of gathering stitches close to the edge of the fabric (approximately ⅛ inch). Stitch your second row of gathering stitches approximately ¼ inch from the edge.
To do this, set the sewing machine to a gather or basting stitch. If the machine does not have these stitches, use a regular straight stitch, and lengthen it to the longest stitch length possible with no backstitch (also called a locking stitch) at the beginning or end. Try it on a scrap of fabric first and check that after stitching, the threads can easily be removed by pulling on them. Depending on the machine, the bobbin tension may need to be loosened.
TIP – Stitch in the same direction for both rows of stitches (e.g. clockwise or counterclockwise). It does not matter which direction as long as both lines of stitches go the same way. This will make gathering a lot easier.
TIP – Use a different colored top thread to the bobbin thread. That way they are easy to differentiate when gathering. Also, it is a great way to use up all those left-over bobbin threads!
1.6Find and mark the quarter points of the Frill and the Front Pillow.
Lay the Front Pillow right side facing up. Place the Frill onto the Front Pillow, right sides together, matching quarter points. SQUARE / RECTANGLE – Match seams to the corners.
Starting at one end, find a pair of bobbin threads and gently pull on them to gather the Frill in one quarter. Pin.
Continue gathering in between each quarter until it is the same length on all sides as the Front Pillow. Pin.
NOTE – For a square/rectangle pillow you will need to add a little fullness into each corner.
1.7Baste using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
TIP – Basting is just like normal stitching except the stitches need to be long and loose so that they can be removed later, if needed. Stitch within the seam allowance, so that the basting stitches are not seen in the final garment, while keeping the stitches loose enough to pull out just in case they are visible. The purpose is to hold a piece of fabric in place until that section is properly sewn. Set the machine to a long loose stitch. Test it on a piece of fabric first to make sure that the stitches can easily be removed. Do not backstitch at either end. Leave the ends loose, with approximately 1 inch of thread tails at either end of the stitching.
NOTE – Go slowly when stitching the corners together on a square/rectangle Pillow as there is more fabric at the corners.
TIP – If your fabric frays, zigzag stitch / serge the edges to help prevent fraying.
Skip to step 6 for the center opening, or step 7 for end opening or step 8 for zip closure.
2 . OPTIONAL Trim2.0Trim can be added to all shapes and sizes. If you are adding the OPTIONAL Trim, follow below.
If you are not adding Trim, skip to:
2.1Lay the Front Pillow right side facing up. Place the trim along the edges, right sides facing, with the decorative part of the trim facing towards the center. Pin.
NOTE – If your trim is narrower than the ½ inch seam allowance, make sure you are placing it within the seam allowance.
2.2Baste using a ¼ inch seam allowance.

3 . OPTIONAL Tassels3.0Tassels can be added to the square or rectangle pillow covers, in any size. If you would like to make your own Tassels, follow steps 3.1 to 3.9. If you have store bought Tassels, skip to step 3.10.
If you are sewing a circle pillow skip to step 8. If you are not adding Tassels, skip to:
TIP – An easy way to cut your thread/yarn to make tassels is to wrap it around a piece of card cut to the length of your finished tassel. When you have the required thickness, pass a single thread under the wrapped threads and tie to secure them together. Slide out the card and cut the loops at the opposite end to the one that has been tied.
TIP – If using embroidery thread to make tassels, you can add a small piece of batting inside the threads to make the ball of the tassel thicker before tying in step 3.5.
3.1The number of pieces to cut per Tassel will depend on the thickness of your yarn. I have used a thin yarn in this tutorial. You may need to adjust the number of cut pieces needed per Tassel. Here is how I have done it.
Cut 27 pieces 6-inches in length.
NOTE – This is for 1x Tassel. You will need four in total.
3.2Keep one thread aside. Place one thread straight across. Fan the rest of the threads over the straight thread, overlapping at the middle.
TIP – To make the Tassel more secure you can use two threads instead of one. This is especially useful if you have little ones or pets.
3.3Gently lift the straight thread up. Tie a tight knot.
3.4Wrap this thread around the Tassel and make another knot on the other side to secure it. You will be attaching this thread into your seam – do not cut it off.
3.5Lay the other thread straight. Place the Tassel at the middle of the thread, ⅜ – 1 inch away from the top of the Tassel.
3.6Make a double knot, creating the little ball on the top of the Tassel.
3.7Spin it around the Tassel and make another tight double knot.
3.8Tuck the tails through the top. The Tassel is finished.
3.9Repeat steps 3.1 to 3.8 to make the other three Tassels.
3.10Lay the Front Pillow right side facing up. Place a Tassel at a corner, taking each side of the top thread across to either side of the corner, within the seam allowance. Pin.
NOTE – The main part of the Tassel should be facing towards the center of the Pillow.
3.11Stitch over each Tassel three to four times, using a ¼ inch seam allowance.
Repeat steps 3.10 to 3.11 to attach the other three Tassels to the remaining corners.
Skip to step 6 for the center opening, or step 7 for end opening or step 8 for zip closure.
4 . OPTIONAL Ties4.0Ties can be added to the M-L square / rectangle end opening pillow covers. If you are adding Ties, follow below.
If you are sewing a circle pillow skip to step 8, or are not adding Ties to your pillow cover, skip to:
SERGER / OVERLOCKER OPTION – Fold the Tie in half lengthwise, right sides together. Pin one short edge and the long raw edge. Skip to step 4.3
REGULAR SEWING MACHINE OPTION – Follow below.
4.1Fold the Tie in half lengthwise, right sides together. Pin one short edge and the long raw edge.
4.2Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – You are leaving one short edge unstitched for turning.
4.3Turn the Tie right way out. If you have a favorite method to do this, please use it. Alternatively, here is how I like to do it.
TIP – It is best to use a blunt object like a chopstick.
Open the seam allowance stitched in step 4.2. Insert the chopstick until it reaches the stitching.
Push the Tie over the chopstick, pushing the Tie all the way over the chopstick, until it is turned right side out. Push the chopstick back out through the gap.
4.4Press.
OPTIONAL: Topstitch the short and long edges using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.
4.5Repeat steps 4.1 to 4.4 for the other five Ties.
4.6Lay the Front Pillow right sides facing up. Place three Ties at the pattern markings, right sides together, matching raw edges. Pin.
4.7Baste using a ¼ inch seam allowance.

NOTE – If you are using a plain fabric you can attach the Ties to either short side of the Back Pillow. If you are using a print fabric you will need to attach the Ties to the mirror image of the Front Pillow, so they are on opposite sides.
Skip to step 7 for the end opening.
5 . Oxford OPTION5.0You can only sew the Oxford style with the large rectangle pillow. If you are not sewing this option, skip to:
SERGER / OVERLOCKER OPTION – Place a Short Edge and a Long Edge right sides together, matching an angled edge. Pin. Serge using a ½ inch seam allowance. Repeat to join the other Short and Long Edges together. Repeat to join these two pieces together to create one frame. Repeat for the other set of Long and Short Edges to create a second ‘frame’. Follow steps 5.4 to 5.9. Serge using a ½ inch seam allowance. Follow steps 5.11 to 5.14. Serge using a ½ inch seam allowance. Flip the Front Flap over, right side facing up. Repeat for the Back Flap. Place the Front and Back Pillows right sides together. Pin three edges, leaving the edge with the End Opening pieces open. Serge using a ½ inch seam allowance. Lay the Back of the Pillow wrong side up. Fold the Front Flap at the seam, over the Back Flap, right side of the Front Flap to wrong side of the Back Pillow. Pin. Serge along each side of the Front Flap using a ½ inch seam allowance. Serge all three edges. Turn right side out.
REGULAR SEWING MACHINE OPTION – Follow below.
5.1Place a Short Edge and a Long Edge right sides together, matching an angled edge. Pin.
5.2Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
5.3Repeat step 5.1 to 5.2 to attach the second pair of Short and Long Edges.
Repeat to attach these two pairs together so you have one piece. It will now form an Oxford style ‘frame’.
Press the seam allowances open.
Repeat steps 5.1 to 5.3 to the other set of Long and Short Edges to create a second ‘frame’.
5.4Place the two Oxford frames right sides together, matching the outside edges and seams. Pin.
5.5Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance. When you get to a corner, keep the needle down and pivot the fabric. Then continue stitching.
5.6Trim the corners to reduce bulk.
5.7Turn the right way out and press.
5.8Match the inner edges together. Pin.
Baste using a ⅛ inch seam allowance.

5.9Lay the Front Pillow right side facing up. Place the Oxford piece right sides down, matching the inner edge to the raw edge of the Front Pillow. Pin.
NOTE – Be careful not to catch the corners of the Oxford frame into the seam allowance.
Make a small snip into each corner of the Oxford frame. This will make it easier to stitch at the corners.
5.10Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
TIP – If your corners are not sitting correctly, make another small snip into each corner.
5.11Fold one long side of the Front Flap ¼ inch to the wrong side. Press.
5.12Fold another ¼ inch and press.
5.13Topstitch using a ⅛ seam allowance.
5.14Lay the Front Pillow right side facing up. Place the long edge of the Front Flap onto one short edge of the Oxford frame, right sides together. Pin.
5.15Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
Flip the Front Flap over, right side facing up, keeping the Oxford frame right side onto the right side of the Front Pillow.
5.16Repeat steps 5.11 to 5.15 to attach the Back Flap to the Back Pillow.
5.17Place the Front and Back Pillows right sides together. Pin three edges, leaving the Flap side open.
NOTE – Check that the Oxford frame is not caught.
5.18Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – You are only stitching from the top of the Back Flap.
TIP – Use a zigzag stitch or serge for a neater finish.
5.19Lay the Back of the Pillow wrong side up. Fold the Front Flap at the seam from step 5.15, over the Back Flap, right side of the Front Flap to wrong side of the Back Pillow. Pin.
5.20Stitch along each side of the Front Flap using a ½ inch seam allowance.
5.21Zigzag stitch or serge all around the three edges to neaten the edges and prevent fraying.
5.22Turn the Pillow Cover right side out.
Your Oxford Pillow Cover is finished!
6 . Center Opening OPTION6.0If you are making the Center Opening OPTION, follow below.
If you are sewing a circle pillow skip to step 8. If you are not sewing this closure style, skip to:
SERGER / OVERLOCKER OPTION – Serge one edge of the Center Opening. This will be the edge that is not attached to the Front Pillow. Fold ½ inch to the wrong side. Press. Topstitch using a ⅛ inch seam allowance. Repeat for the second Center Opening. Lay the Front Pillow right side facing up. Place one Center Opening piece onto a short side, matching raw edges. Pin. Place the second Center Opening piece onto the opposite short edge of the Front Pillow, matching raw edges. Pin. Serge all four sides using a ½ inch seam allowance. Turn the Pillow Cover right side out.
REGULAR SEWING MACHINE OPTION – Follow below.
6.1Fold the edge of the Center Opening ¼ inch to the wrong side. Press.
NOTE – This is the edge that is not attached to the Front Pillow. If you are using directional print fabric, check the direction of the print.
6.2Fold another ¼ inch and press.
6.3Topstitch using a ⅛ seam allowance.
6.4Repeat steps 6.1 to 6.3 for the other Center Opening piece.
TIP – If you are using a directional print, you need to fold and stitch the mirror image on the second Center Opening pieces, so they are on opposite sides.
6.5Lay the Front Pillow right side facing up. Place one Center Opening piece onto a short side, matching raw edges. Pin.
NOTE – If you are using a directional print, check you have attached the Center Opening the right way up, matching the Front Pillow.
6.6Place the second Center Opening piece onto the opposite short edge of the Front Pillow, matching raw edges. Pin.
NOTE – The two Center Openings will overlap at the center.
6.7Stitch all four sides using a ½ inch seam allowance.
TIP – Use a zigzag stitch or serge for a neater finish.
6.8Turn out the Pillow Cover right side out.
Your Pillow Cover is finished!
7 . End Opening OPTION7.0End Openings can only be added to the M-L square / rectangle pillow covers. If you are making the End Opening OPTION, follow below.
If you are sewing a circle pillow or using a zip closure skip to step 8.
SERGER / OVERLOCKER OPTION – Serge one long edge of the Back Flap. Fold ½ inch to the wrong side. Press. Topstitch using a ⅛ inch seam allowance. Repeat for the Front Flap. Lay the Front Pillow right side facing up. Place the Front Flap onto the left side, right sides facing, matching raw edges. Pin the long raw edge. Serge. Flip the Front Flap over, right side facing up. Repeat to the Back Flap and Back Pillow. Place the Front and Back Pillows right sides together. Pin three edges, leaving the Flap side open. Serge using a ½ inch seam allowance. Lay the Back of the Pillow wrong side up. Fold the Front Flap at the seam, over the Back Flap, right side of the Front Flap to wrong side of the Back Pillow. Pin. Serge along each side of the Front Flap using a ½ inch seam allowance. Turn right side out. Follow step 7.12.
REGULAR SEWING MACHINE OPTION – Follow below.
7.1Fold one long side of a Back Flap ¼ inch to the wrong side. Press.
NOTE – If you are using a directional print fabric, this will be the left long edge. If you are attaching ties or buttons it will be the edge with the pattern markings.
7.2Fold another ¼ inch and press.
7.3Topstitch using a ⅛ seam allowance.
7.4Repeat steps 7.1 to 7.3 on one long edge of the Front Flap.
NOTE – If you are using directional print, this will be the right edge.
7.5Lay the Front Pillow right side facing up. Place the Front Flap onto the left side, right sides facing, matching raw edges. Pin the long raw edge.
NOTE – If you have added Ties/Frill/Trim these will be sandwiched between the two layers. Check that these are laying flat and out of the way.
7.6Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
Flip the Front Flap over, right side facing up.
7.7Repeat steps 7.5 to 7.6 to the Back Flap and Back Pillow.
7.8Place the Front and Back Pillows right sides together. Pin three edges, leaving the Flap side open.
7.9Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – You are only stitching from the top of the Back Flap.
TIP – Use a zigzag stitch or serge for a neater finish.
7.10Lay the Back of the Pillow wrong side up. Fold the Front Flap at the seam from step 7.6, over the Back Flap, right side of the Front Flap to wrong side of the Back Pillow. Pin.
7.11Stitch along each side of the Front Flap using a ½ inch seam allowance.
7.12Zigzag stitch or serge all around the three edges to neaten the edges and prevent fraying.
7.13Turn the Pillow Cover right side out.
7.14OPTIONAL – Topstitch the Front and Back Flap at the seam from step 7.6 and 7.7, using ⅛ inch seam allowance.
If you are adding buttons, continue following below.
If you are not adding buttons, your Pillow Cover is finished.
7.15BUTTONS – Using the pattern markings, stitch the three buttonholes through the Front Pillow and Front Flap.
TIP – Test a buttonhole on a scrap of fabric first to check it fits your button.
TIP – Use a seam ripper to open each buttonhole. Place a pin across one end to stop it from going all the way through.
7.16Hand stitch your buttons onto the Back Flap at the pattern marking.
NOTE – You are only attaching the buttons to the Back Flap. Do not stitch through the Back Pillow.
8 . Zipper OPTION8.0This step is the same for all shapes and sizes.
SERGER / OVERLOCKER OPTION – Follow steps 8.1 to 8.6. Serge using a ½ inch seam allowance. Turn the Pillow Cover right side out.
REGULAR SEWING MACHINE OPTION – Follow below.
8.1Unzip the invisible zip and place it teeth face down onto your ironing board.
When the zip is closed the teeth of the zip curl upwards. Ironing the teeth will help them lie flatter, which will make it easier to sew.
I find the best way to do this is to use my fingers to press the teeth gently towards the center. Butt the iron up against the teeth gliding the iron along the zip. The zip will look a little odd, but the teeth should lay flat.
NOTE – Use a warm dry (no steam) iron. Be careful not to iron directly on top of the teeth as it can damage or melt them. The goal is just to flatten the zip a little to make it easier to attach.
Shorten your zipper if necessary. To do this, stitch a stationary bar tack several times over the zipper to stop the zipper going below this point. Then cut the remaining zipper off.
TIP – A stationary bar tack is a wide stitch that does not go anywhere. You stitch from side to side, not moving forward. You can do this by hand, or set your machine to 0 stitch length, and a stitch width that reaches from one side of the zip to the other.
8.2Find and mark the middle of the zipper and the middle of the edge you are attaching the zipper to.
SQUARE / RECTANGLE – This can be any of the short sides.
CIRCLE – As this is round you can attach the zipper anywhere.
8.3Open the zipper. Place the right zipper tape onto the marked edge of the Front Pillow, matching centers and raw edges, right sides together. The zipper teeth will be facing towards the center of the Pillow. Pin.
CIRCLE – As you are attaching the zipper to a curved edge you will need to ease the zipper along. Use lots of pins to help keep it in place.
8.4INVISIBLE ZIPPER FOOT OPTION – If you have an invisible zipper foot, put this on your machine now. Line the zipper teeth up with the left side groove of the foot. This will help roll the teeth to the side while stitching close to the zipper teeth. Stitch slowly from the top of the zipper all the way down as close to the zipper pull as you can.
REGULAR ZIPPER FOOT OPTION – If you don’t have an invisible zipper foot, you can use a regular zipper foot. Stitch the zipper to the pillow, as close to the zipper teeth as you can. Stitch from the top of the zipper as close to the zipper pull as you can.
8.5Repeat steps 8.2 to 8.4 to attach the left zipper tape on the Back Pillow.
TIP – Check you are able to close the zipper before moving onto the next step.
8.6Place the Front and Back Pillows right sides together. Pin.
Open the zipper at least 2 inches for turning the Pillow Cover through.
Make sure that the top and bottom of the zipper tape is pinned into the seam allowance.
8.7Stitch from one side of the zipper to the other side, using a ½ inch seam allowance.
TIP – Use a zigzag stitch or serge to finish the raw edges.
8.8Turn the Pillow Cover right side out.

You can finish them with either a center opening, end opening, ties, buttons or zips. Add optional trims or tassels or an Oxford edging to the large rectangle to really make them your own.

These can be added to most shapes and sizes, except the Tassels cannot be added to a circle pillow. The circle pillow can only be finished with a zipper. - Piping/Trim – minimum 5mm wide.
- Rectangle – approximately 3 yards will be sufficient for all sizes.
- Circle – approximately 2.25 yards will be sufficient for all sizes.
- Square – approximately 2.75 yards will be sufficient for all sizes.
- 4x Tassels or yarn / thick embroidery thread to make your own.
