- This is not meant to be a form fitting pattern. It is not the same fit as a ready-to-wear cape you might buy in a store. The idea is it’s a loose dress-up cape that will drape over your shoulders and that you can wrap around yourself.
- The sizing is unisex. Pick the finished length of cape that you feel will be most comfortable on you. Approximate ages and chest measurements are provided but you will get the best fit by measuring the length down your back and picking a size from this.
- The cape does not need to be done up. Chest sizes have been provided to give you an idea what each size was drafted for. However, it just wraps around you so there is a lot of leeway.
- If you get stuck with fitting, see our favorite resources on our Pinterest Sewing Fitting Advice board.
- OPTIONAL – A small piece of woven fabric for the neck fastenings (less than ¼ yard)
- OPTIONAL – Hook and eye (also called Velcro) for the neck fastening (approximately 3 inches long)
- OPTIONAL – Elastic for the finger grips. You can use any elastic (or ribbon or anything else you’d like!). In the photos in the instructions we used 5mm wide elastic.
- OPTIONAL – Any other trim or decoration you can think of!
- Thread to match

Fitting NotesMaterials and ToolsYou can use any non-fraying woven fabric for this pattern. Best results will be from something with some body or stiffness to it such as felt, leather, pleather, faux leather, vinyl, medium weight nylons,
You can also use lighter weight non-fraying woven fabrics such as fleece or light weight nylon. However as much of the cape has holes cut through it, you may find the holes sag a little after wear for a while. Stiffer fabrics such as leather will hold their shape better.
If you wish to use a fabric that frays such as cotton or lace, an alternative is to laminate it. To do this, cut your cape shape first (no holes), laminate the fabric, then mark and cut the holes.
If you are selecting a fabric with a directional print, please be aware the larger pattern pieces need to be turned so they are cut out running down the fabric rather than across.

* If you are using a narrower fabric, a directional print, or a fabric with nap you may need more.
** Make sure to wash, dry, and press all fabrics before cutting out in case they shrink.NOTE – The adult cape will not fit on 45 inch wide fabric. If you wish to use this, you will need to cut 2 mirror image pieces of your cape (rather than one on the fold) and stitch together. This will require approximately 3 yards of fabric. You will also need to go over your stitches or seal the threads along the join once you have cut the web hole out to ensure the stitching does not unravel.
You will also need:
Tools needed are scissors, pins, tailors chalk or a disappearing marker, ruler, and either a needle & thread or a sewing machine.
Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.
Please follow this video for information and assistance on assembling this pattern.
Also, please note that some Rebecca Page patterns and projects also come with cut files and a printable design page which you can use to plan your project if you wish. These are provided in a separate section below to avoid any confusion!

- CUTTING OUT YOUR CAPE – Tape or glue your pattern pieces together. Trim the edges of the pattern so you now have your cape shape. Cut out the web holes. Fold your fabric in half and align the ‘fold line’ on the fold. Cut around the top and sides of the cape to remove the excess fabric and form the cape shape. Cut out web holes with either a rotary blade or scissors. Unfold your cape. If needed, gently brush any remaining tailors chalk off the cape and press.
- FASTENINGS – Fold each piece of elastic in half to form a loop. Pin 1 inch from top corner and sew approximately ¼ to ½ inch from the edge. Sew over this elastic several times for extra security. Fold each neck fastening piece in half lengthwise. For both pieces, stitch across the long side and one short side using a ¼ inch seam allowance to form a tube with one end closed. Cut the corners of the neck fastening seam allowance off. Turn through and press. Stitch the furry (loop) piece of your hook and loop to one neck fastening and the scratchy (hook) piece of your hook and loop to the other neck fastening. Find the center of the neck edge of your cape. Measure 5 inches to each side and mark with a pin. Make sure one fastening is facing upwards, and one downwards so that when the cape is completed, they meet together and will do up.
- Neck Fastening – This is a strip of Velcro either side of the neck that folds over itself to fasten.
- Elastics – These are a loop of elastic near the end of the cape that you can put your middle finger through.
Quick Glance Cheat SheetCutting & Sewing –
1 . Cutting Out Your CapeSeam Allowance
½ inch seam allowance included – Top stitching ⅛ inch
1.0Usually the cutting and sewing instructions are separate but as much of the cape is just cutting, they are together. Follow along below in order.
1.1If you are printing using layers, only print the size you need.
If you are not printing using the layers feature, all the sizes will print. Each size is the same shape but a different length. You will need to look for the hemline of your size.
Tape or glue your pattern pieces together.
1.2Trim the edges of the pattern so you now have your cape shape.
1.3Cut out the web holes.
You can either use a rotary cutter or scissors to do this. If you use scissors, you’ll need to make a small hole in the middle of the web hole, and then cut out to the edges of it. It’s the cape piece, not the hole that we want to keep intact.
NOTE – If you have not used layers to print, you’ll see the length cutting lines from the other sizes. Ignore these. You are just cutting out the holes. We won’t use those other lines.
1.4Fold your fabric in half and align the ‘fold line’ on the fold.
If you are doing one of the smaller sizes, you will be able to fold across the fabric, so the grainline points up and down. If you are doing a larger size, you will need to turn your fabric so you can fit your pattern piece running down the fabric.
Pin or weight the cape to your fabric. Make sure to use plenty of pins or pattern weights as we will be marking the holes out and you want to make sure the pattern piece stays in one place and doesn’t move.
1.5Cut around the top and sides of the cape to remove the excess fabric and form the cape shape.
1.6Cut out web holes. You can do this two different ways:
OPTION 1 – Cut out holes with rotary blade
1.7OPTION 2 – Or you can trace the holes with tailor’s chalk and cut them out with scissors.
If you choose this method, trace the holes, remove your pattern, pin between the holes, and then cut out. For the holes in the center of the pattern piece it is easiest to make a small snip in the middle first, then cut around to the edges of the hole.
1.8Unfold your cape. If needed, gently brush any remaining tailors chalk off the cape and press.
TIP – Make sure to press (put your iron down firmly, then lift and put down firmly again and lift), rather than iron (move your iron from side to side). This will help make sure you don’t catch it on any of the cut out sections.
TIP – If you are using a specialty fabric such as felt or leather for your cape, make sure to check the recommended iron settings before pressing. Turn off your steam and press using a pressing cloth or clean tea towel between the cape and the iron to protect both.
2 . Fastenings2.0There are two fastenings in this section. Both are optional. For those who like to put a costume on and then just play without it falling off, you will want both. For those who hate being fastened into anything and would rather just hold on to it, you might just want one, or none!
The two options are:
2.1If you are doing the elastics, follow along. If not, skip to step 2.3.
Fold each piece of elastic in half to form a loop.
If possible, check your model’s finger fits through the elastic easily. It should be quite comfortable. For older children, it should be a little loose so they can get it on and off themselves easily. Adjust if necessary.
2.2Pin 1 inch from top corner and sew approximately ¼ to ½ inch from the edge. Sew over this elastic several times for extra security.
2.3Fold each neck fastening piece in half lengthwise.
For both pieces, stitch across the long side and one short side using a ¼ inch seam allowance to form a tube with one end closed.
2.4Cut the corners of the neck fastening seam allowance off (don’t cut all the way to the stitching line or it will fray, just cut the bulk off so it’s easier when we turn it right way out).
Turn through and press.
TIP – Use a point turner or something long and thin like a chopstick to poke the corners out.
2.5Stitch the furry (loop) piece of your hook and loop to one neck fastening and the scratchy (hook) piece of your hook and loop to the other neck fastening.
TIP – Some sewing machines don’t like stitching through hook and loop and will skip stitches. Try a test bit first on a scrap of fabric. Go slowly and use a slightly longer stitch.
2.6Find the center of the neck edge of your cape. Measure 5 inches to each side and mark with a pin.
Make sure one fastening is facing upwards, and one downwards so that when the cape is completed, they meet together and will do up.
Pin and one neck fastener at the spot you just marked. Make sure to tuck the raw edges under so they aren’t visible. Stitch in place. Make sure to stitch back and forwards several times to hold it in place securely.
TIP – If you place the furry/loop neck fastening up, and the scratchy/hook one down, it means when the cape is on, the scratchy one is out from the neck so it can never accidentally itch sensitive child skin.
