Project OverviewTie
Difficulty Level = Beginner
Sew this beginner friendly classic Tie using a fabric that channels the personality of the wearer. Suitable for children through to adults. Sizes M-XL are self tie. Sizes XXS-S have an optional Safety Neckband for added safety for younger children.
Sew a traditional bow tie, with three sizes to choose from. This can be added to either an adjustable neckband, a pets collar or a safety neckband which is attached around the neck with hook and loop tape.

Wash, dry, and press your fabric before starting your project. A bit of prep now prevents shrinking and means your garment will stay the same size you made it.
Never leave a child or baby unattended or allow to sleep in a garment made from one of our patterns with ties, snaps, buttons, or anything they could remove, choke on, or get caught on. Always use caution if you are unsure. We love our patterns, but we love your bundles of joy more!

We recommend a safety neckband for younger children. If you are using the Safety Neckband, measure the neck with the shirt collar and use measurements below to choose your neckband size. If you are making a pet Bow Tie, you will attach it to your pet’s collar with elastic. Choose the Bow Tie size based on your dog’s size. The small works well for small breeds, medium for medium breeds and large for large breeds.

Great examples are cotton, silk, wool, cashmere, linen. Avoid using super-sheer materials. The Tip is the fabric that is sewn onto the back side of the Tie. You can use the same fabric as your Tie, or for a bit of fun use a different/contrasting fabric to your main pieces.
NOTE – We do not recommend using a directional print fabric as the pieces are cut on the bias.
OPTIONAL Lining – If your fabric doesn’t have much structure to it, you can add a layer of lining fabric. It needs to be a light to medium weight woven fabric. Suitable fabrics include habotai (silk or polyester), poly anti-static lining, cotton, quilting cotton, and satin. You will need the same yardage as the Tie.
Interlining – The interlining is a layer of fabric which goes in the center of the pieces. You can’t see it from the outside or inside – it is completely hidden. The purpose of the interlining layer is to provide support to the Tie. It’s fast and easy to sew, while also providing a great structure. You can use a medium weight woven with a little give. Brushed wool, cotton drill, twill, calico, gabardine drill or other similar weight fabrics are a great alternative. Or something like Coutil which gives structure while also being breathable.

Printing Your PatternSettings
The pattern is a separate download. Choose either the US letter paper, A4 paper, or A0 paper size based on the printer you wish to use. If you are in the US or Canada then your printer will likely use US letter paper. Other regions normally use A4 paper. Some people prefer to print their patterns at a print shop: A0 is best in this case.
Print at 100%.
On the second page, you will find a 1-inch and a 3-inch square test box. Print this page first, on its own, and measure these squares.
Once you are happy that the test box is accurate, print the rest of the pattern pages.

NOTE – To cut fabric on the fold, fold your fabric over parallel to the selvage edges. Align the pattern piece so it is on the fold of the fabric. Cut around the edges, leaving the fold. If you have folded your fabric correctly the fold will be parallel to the two edges of the fabric that are finished. The raw edges (e.g. the ones you could pick at and threads would come off) will be at a right angle to your fold.

- PATTERN MARKINGS – Transfer all pattern markings.

- TIE CONSTRUCTION – Lay the Blade right side facing up. Place the Tail down, right sides together, matching the straight edge, at the seam allowance, not the raw edge. Stitch. Press seam open. Repeat for Interlining. Lay Tie right side facing up. Place Tail Tip right sides together, matching one short and one long edge. Stitch, stopping ½ inch before you reach the end. Take the other short and long raw edge over to the other side of the Tail. Stitch, stopping ½ inch before you reach the end of the Tip. Fold Tie in half, right sides together, matching edges. Stitch across the point. Turn and press. Repeat with the Blade Tip. Fold seam allowance along entire length to wrong side. Press.
- INTERLINING – Insert Interlining inside Tip pieces on both ends. Fold long edges over to wrong side, meeting in the middle. Press. Stitch Keeper Loop onto seam allowance at pattern marking.
- FINISHING – Stitch a bar tack at pattern marking. Stitch center back seam together using a slipstitch, then a bar tack at pattern marking. Find center of Keeper Loop. Press it flat, matching center to center back seam. Pin. Slipstitch each side.
- OPTIONAL SAFETY NECKBAND – Fold Safety Neckband in half lengthwise, right sides together. Stitch both short edges and the long raw edge, leaving a 1-2 inch gap. Clip corners and trim seam allowance. Turn Safety Neckband right way out. Press. Stitch hook and loop tape to opposite ends and sides. Tie the Tie around the Safety Neckband.

0.1Pattern Markings
Transfer all pattern markings to the fabric using a disappearing ink pen or tailors chalk.
0.2OPTIONAL Safety Neckband Interfacing
Use the manufacturer’s instructions to apply interfacing to the wrong side of your Safety Neckband.
0.3OPTIONAL Lining
If you are adding optional Lining, baste your Main and Lining pieces together. You will treat these as one piece.
TIP – Basting is just like normal stitching except the stitches need to be long and loose so that they can be removed later, if needed. Stitch within the seam allowance, so that the basting stitches are not seen in the final garment, while keeping the stitches loose enough to pull out just in case they are visible. The purpose is to hold a piece of fabric in place until that section is properly sewn. Set the machine to a long loose stitch. Test it on a piece of fabric first to make sure that the stitches can easily be removed. Do not backstitch at either end. Leave the ends loose, with approximately 1 inch of thread tails at either end of the stitching.
1 . Keeper Loop1.1If you are familiar with making double fold bias tape, please use this. If not, don’t worry, just follow along here.
Fold the Keeper Loop in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Press.
1.2Open the Keeper Loop then fold the two long sides into the middle and press.
1.3Refold the Keeper Loop along the first middle fold, folding the raw edges to the inside. Press.
1.4Topstitch one long edge using ⅛ inch seam allowance.
2 . Tie Construction2.1Lay the Blade right side facing up. Place the Tail down, right sides together, matching the straight edge, at the ½ inch seam allowance, not the raw edge. Pin.
One pointed edge of the Blade and Tail pieces will stick out slightly. You want the little triangle where the two pieces meet to be ½ inch away from the raw edge. That way, when you sew the two pieces together, they will meet up exactly.
2.2Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
2.3Press the seam allowance open.
NOTE – You will now treat this as one Tie piece.
2.4Repeat steps 2.1 to 2.3 for the Blade and Tail Interlining pieces.
NOTE – Handle the Tail Interlining with care as it is cut on the bias and will stretch if handled too much.
2.5Lay the Tie down flat with the right side facing up. Place the Tail Tip right sides together, matching one short and one long edge. Pin.
2.6Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance, stopping ½ inch before you reach the end of the Tip.
2.7Take the other short and long raw edge over to the other side of the Tail. Pin.
2.8Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance, stopping ½ inch before you reach the end of the Tip, meeting the stitching from step 2.6.
TIP – Do not stitch over the first stitching to create a precise point.
NOTE – Be careful not to stitch the excess fabric in the middle of the Tie.
2.9Fold the Tie in half, right sides together, matching edges. Pin.
2.10Stitch across the point, from the center to the raw edge, using a ½ inch seam allowance. This stitch should be perpendicular to the previous stitching and within the seam allowance. Do not cross it over.
2.11Turn it out. Press.
TIP – Push out the corners with a blunt object, like a chopstick, so that there are crisp, sharp edges and corners.
2.12Repeat steps 2.5 to 2.12 adding the Blade Tip to the Blade.
2.13Fold a ½ inch seam allowance along the entire length of the Tie, towards the wrong side. Press.
NOTE – Be very careful when pressing your fabric.
3 . Interlining3.1Insert the Tie Interlining inside the Tip pieces on both ends.
NOTE – Handle the Tie Interlining with care as it is cut on the bias and will stretch if handled too much.
3.2Fold the long edges of the Tie over to the wrong side, meeting in the middle. Press.
3.3Place the Keeper Loop onto the seam allowance of the Tie at the pattern marking. Pin.
3.4Stitch using ¼ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – You are only stitching the Keeper Loop to the seam allowance.
4 . Finishing4.1Pin the center back seam together.
4.2Thread your needle, tying the two thread tail ends together in a knot. This will provide added strength to the finished seam.
TIP – Use a very long piece of thread so that you are able to sew the entire seam in one go. This will ensure the flow of the Tie is more natural then if you add several anchored points along the seam.
4.3You will be stitching a bar tack at the Tail end of the Tie, 2 inches / 5cm down, then stitching the center back seam using a slipstitch (also called a ‘ladder stitch’).
Push the needle up and through one of the folded seams, from the inside of the Tie to the outside, pulling the thread tail completely through. The knotted end will now be nicely concealed within the seam on the inside.
Directly across from the starting point, push the needle through the seam allowance, catching the Interlining, pushing the needle back up through the starting point.
Repeat a few times to secure.
NOTE – Check you are not stitching all the way through to the front.
4.4You will then be stitching the folded edges of the seams using a slipstitch.
Directly across from the starting point, push the needle down and then back up through the opposite seam fold to create a stitch that is between a ⅛ – ¼ inch long. When you pull the thread through, you will notice that the stitch you just made is concealed within the seam crease, and there will be a horizontal stitch connecting the left and right sides of the opening.
Pull the thread through so that it is taut.
NOTE – Check you are only stitching through the back of the Tie and not through the entire Tie, otherwise your stitches will be visible.
Repeat these steps, stopping 2 inches / 5 cm away from the end of the seam, pinching both sides together as you sew (this will help keep your stitching even), until you reach the end of the opening. To tighten the stitches, gently pull the thread. This will conceal the stitches in between the seams.
We’ve left the stitches loose in this picture to show you what the ladder stitch looks like. You will be pulling the thread through and taut after each stitch.
To end, stitch another bar tack as you did in step 4.3. Snip your threads. Press if needed.
4.5Find the center of the Keeper Loop.
4.6Press it flat against the Tie, matching the center to the center back seam. Pin.
4.7Slipstitch each side of the Keeper Loop to the back of the Tie.
4.8If you are sewing the OPTIONAL Safety Neckband for sizes XXS-S, follow below.
If you are not adding the OPTIONAL Safety Neckband, your Tie is finished!
5 . OPTIONAL Safety Neckband5.0If you are sewing sizes XXS-S you can tie the Tie around this Safety Neckband as a safety measure as it can easily be pulled off.
5.1Fold the Safety Neckband in half lengthwise, right sides together. Pin both short edges and the long raw edge.
5.2Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance leaving a 1-2 inch gap for turning.
5.3Clip the corners and trim the seam allowance.
5.4Turn your Neckband right way out. If you have a preferred method to do this, please use it. Alternatively, here is how I like to do it.
Open the seam allowance stitched in step 5.2. Insert the top of the chopstick to the stitching. Push the Safety Neckband over the chopstick, pushing it all the way over the chopstick, until it is turned right side out through the gap.
Press.
5.5Topstitch along all edges using ⅛ inch seam allowance.
5.6Place the hook (scratchy) part of the hook and loop tape onto one side of the Safety Neckband. Pin.
Place the loop (furry) part of the hook and loop tape onto the other end of the Safety Neckband, on the opposite side. Pin.
NOTE – Your loop piece will be longer than the hook piece to make it easier to adjust the fit around the neck.
5.7Stitch in place using ¼ inch seam allowance.
Your Safety Neckband is finished. You can now tie the Tie around the Safety Neckband.
5.8Lay the Tie wrong side facing up. Place the Safety Neckband on top, placing it where the final knot will be on the Tie.
5.9Fold the Tail (thin end) over the Safety Neckband.
5.10Pick up the Blade and cross it over the Tail.
5.11Take the Blade under the Safety Neckband and up at an angle, creating the knot.
5.12Flip the Blade over the Safety Neckband at an angle.
5.13Wrap the Blade under the knot.
5.14Fold the Blade up over the front of the knot.
5.15Hold the knot and turn it over.
5.16Tuck the Blade through the front of the knot. Pull to tighten the knot. Adjust as needed.
Your Tie is finished!
0 . PreparationSeam Allowance

0.1Use the manufacturer’s instructions to apply interfacing to the wrong side of your pieces.
1 . Bow1.1Fold the Bow in half lengthways, right sides together, matching short edges. Pin.
1.2Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance, leaving a 1 inch gap in the middle for turning.
OPTIONAL – Trim the seam allowance to reduce bulk.
1.3Flatten the Bow with the seam line at the center back. Press.
1.4Pin both sides of the Bow.
1.5Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
1.6Clip the corners to reduce bulk. Be careful not to cut into the stitching.
OPTIONAL – Trim the seam allowance to reduce bulk.
1.7Turn the Bow right side out. Press.
TIP – Push out the corners with a blunt object, like a chopstick, so that there are crisp, sharp edges and corners.
1.8Use a slipstitch (also called a ‘ladder stitch’) to stitch the gap closed.
Thread your needle, tying the two thread tail ends together in a knot. This will provide added strength to your finished seam.
Push your needle up from the inside of the Bow to the outside, through one of the folds, pulling the thread tail completely through. Your knotted end will now be nicely concealed within the seam on the inside.
Directly across from your starting point, push the needle down and then back up through the opposite seam fold to create a stitch that is between ¼ – ½ inch long. When you pull the thread through, you will notice that the stitch you just made is concealed within the seam crease, and there will be a horizontal stitch connecting the left and right sides of your opening.
Pull the thread through so that it is taut.
1.9To help create the perfect Bow, fold both long edges towards the center back seam.
1.10Fold the Bow in half, pinching it in the middle.
1.11Hand stitch through the center to keep in place.
2 . Bow Center2.1Fold the Bow Center in half widthways, right sides together. Pin the long edge.
2.2Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
OPTIONAL – Trim the seam allowance to reduce bulk.
2.3Turn the Bow Center right side out. Flatten the seam at the center back. Press.
If you are sewing the OPTIONAL Pet Collar, skip to step 4.
2.4Wrap the Bow Center around the middle of the Bow, right sides together. Place the raw edges of the Bow Center together. Pin
TIP – For the smaller sizes it may be easier to stitch the Bow Center together first, then slide it over the Bow.
2.5Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
NOTE – Be careful not to stitch the Bow into the seam allowance. You are only stitching the Bow Center piece together.
2.6Turn the Bow Center right side out, with the seam allowance facing inside, covering your hand stitching.
OPTIONAL – Hand stitch the Bow Center onto the Bow to secure it.
If you are adding your Bow to an Adjustable Neckband, follow below.
If you are sewing a pet Bow Tie, skip to step 4.
If you are sewing the OPTIONAL Safety Neckband for a child, skip to step 5.
3 . OPTIONAL Adjustable Neckband3.1If you are familiar with making double fold bias tape, please use this. If not, don’t worry, just follow along here.
Fold the Adjustable Neckband in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Press.
3.2Open the Adjustable Neckband then fold the two long sides into the middle and press.
3.3Refold the Adjustable Neckband along the first middle fold, folding the raw edges to the inside. Press.
3.4Topstitch down both long edges using ⅛ inch seam allowance.
3.5Thread the hook onto one side of the Adjustable Neckband.
3.6Fold the Adjustable Neckband ½ inch wrong sides together.
3.7Fold again overlapping it by 1 inch. Pin.
3.8Top stitch all layers using a ⅛ inch seam allowance to secure it in place.
3.9Thread the slider onto the Adjustable Neckband on the opposite end. Then, thread the eye.
3.10Push the loose end of the Neckband up through the wrong side of the slider, over the center bar, and back through to the wrong side, creating two layers of strapping through the slider.
3.11Fold the end of the Neckband over to the wrong side by ½ inch. Pin. You will now have a loop around the center bar of the slider.
3.12Stitch a rectangle around the folded end of the Strap.
NOTE – Check that you are only stitching through the two layers of the folded Neckband piece only.
3.13Slide the Adjustable Neckband through the Bow Center.
4 . OPTIONAL Pet Bow Tie4.1Fold the elastic in half and center it onto one short side of the Bow Center, right sides together.
4.2Fold the Bow Center over the elastic, matching short ends. Pin.
4.3Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance.
4.4Turn the Bow Center right side out.
4.5Slide the Bow inside the Bow Center.
5 . OPTIONAL Safety Neckband5.1Fold the Safety Neckband in half lengthwise, right sides together. Pin both short edges and the long raw edge.
5.2Stitch using a ½ inch seam allowance leaving a 1-2 inch gap for turning.
5.3Clip the corners and trim the seam allowance.
5.4Turn your Safety Neckband right way out. If you have a preferred method to do this, please use it. Alternatively, here is how I like to do it.
Open the seam allowance stitched in step 5.2. Insert the top of the chopstick to the stitching. Push the Safety Neckband over the chopstick, pushing it all the way over the chopstick, until it is turned right side out through the gap.
Press.
5.5Topstitch along all edges using a ⅛ seam allowance.
5.6Place the hook (scratchy) part of the hook and loop tape onto one side of the Safety Neckband. Pin.
Place the loop (furry) part of the hook and loop tape onto the other end of the Safety Neckband, on the opposite side. Pin.
NOTE – Your loop piece will be longer than the hook piece to make it easier to adjust the fit around the neck.
5.7Stitch in place using ¼ inch seam allowance.
5.8Slide the Safety Neckband through the Bow Center.

Sew this beginner friendly classic Tie using a fabric that channels the personality of the wearer. Suitable for children through to adults. Sizes M-XL are self tie. Sizes XXS-S have an optional Safety Neckband for added safety for younger children.
Sew a traditional bow tie, with three sizes to choose from. This can be added to either an adjustable neckband, a pets collar or a safety neckband which is attached around the neck with hook and loop tape.

We recommend a safety neckband for younger children. If you are using the Safety Neckband, measure the neck with the shirt collar and use measurements below to choose your neckband size. If you are making a pet Bow Tie, you will attach it to your pet’s collar with elastic. Choose the Bow Tie size based on your dog’s size. The small works well for small breeds, medium for medium breeds and large for large breeds.

Great examples are cotton, silk, wool, cashmere, linen. Avoid using super-sheer materials. The Tip is the fabric that is sewn onto the back side of the Tie. You can use the same fabric as your Tie, or for a bit of fun use a different/contrasting fabric to your main pieces.
NOTE – We do not recommend using a directional print fabric as the pieces are cut on the bias.
OPTIONAL Lining – If your fabric doesn’t have much structure to it, you can add a layer of lining fabric. It needs to be a light to medium weight woven fabric. Suitable fabrics include habotai (silk or polyester), poly anti-static lining, cotton, quilting cotton, and satin. You will need the same yardage as the Tie.
Interlining – The interlining is a layer of fabric which goes in the center of the pieces. You can’t see it from the outside or inside – it is completely hidden. The purpose of the interlining layer is to provide support to the Tie. It’s fast and easy to sew, while also providing a great structure. You can use a medium weight woven with a little give. Brushed wool, cotton drill, twill, calico, gabardine drill or other similar weight fabrics are a great alternative. Or something like Coutil which gives structure while also being breathable.
